The Norwich Bioscience Institutes Partnership (NBIP) has an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Advisor to join their busy Health, Safety and Quality Assurance department.
The main duties of the role will include providing health and safety support to the NBI institutes by reviewing and updating health and safety documentation; providing advice and guidance on health and safety matters including biological and chemical safety and responding to emergency incidents when required. The post holder will support the head of HSEQA and their team with the smooth operational of the health and safety management system and its associated processes.
The successful candidate must be self-motivated, enjoy working in a team and be a role model, promoting and encouraging a healthy and safe working environment in line with legislation and best practice.
Key Relationships
The position will report to the Head of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Assurance (HSEQA). The post holder will work closely with other HSEQA team members, EI, JIC, TSL and QIB Lab Managers and the NBIP Facilities team to contribute to the delivery of first-class health and safety on site.
Main Activities & Responsibilities
1. Prepare and update Health and Safety documentation and upload on intranet database such as risk assessments and safe working procedures (i.e Standard Operating Procedures) - 30%
2. Provide general H&S support (including on biological and chemical safety matters) - 20%
3. Investigate incidents, accidents, near misses and provide high standard reports - 20%
4. Support the Head of H&S with the daily administrative running of the occupational health clinics when required - 5%
5. Participate in laboratory audits and inspections - 5%
6. Contribute to safety improvement projects on site - 5%
7. Provide H&S support to Head of HSEQA in relation to NGI project when required - 5%
8. Respond to emergency incidents when required - 5%
9. As agreed with the line manager, any other duties commensurate with the nature of the post - 5%
Person Profile
Education & Qualifications
1. Health and Safety Certificate, or equivalent, or actively completing relevant qualification - Essential
2. Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD in biology or biochemistry - Essential
3. Biological Safety Qualification - Desirable
4. Full UK driving licence - Desirable
Specialist Knowledge & Skills
1. Science background especially biology or biochemistry - Essential
2. Good knowledge and experience of working safely with hazardous materials in laboratory environments - Essential
3. Ability to prepare and review risk assessments, method statements and standard operating procedures - Essential
4. Good level of proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook - Essential
Relevant Experience
1. Experience of working with hazardous chemicals and/or biological materials - Essential

The NBI Partnership provides non-scientific services to the John Innes Centre (JIC), Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), Earlham Institute (EI) and The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL). All of these organisations carry out scientific research funded by the UK Government, European Union, Charitable and Industrial Sponsors. The Partnership employs around 140 staff to cater for the needs of approximately 1100 Research Staff, Students and Visiting Scientists who are all located in close proximity on the Norwich Research Park.
