The Role
As a Gun Fitter for large calibre weapons, you will have a role that is out of the ordinary, acting as a vital member of the team. You will be responsible for maintaining weapons systems and supporting large calibre trials at the MoD Shoeburyness site. You will be involved in all aspects of MoD trial support for large calibre weapons and mounting systems, mechanical equipment and explosive materials which are used in human performance and protection capability through QinetiQ’s bespoke test and evaluation services.
Day-to-day, you will:
1. Support in all aspects of maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing large calibre weapon systems to ensure the safe and serviceable conditions in preparation for trials
2. Ensure that all weaponry and associated equipment are issued for trial and proof activities
3. Provide a variety of preventative, scheduled maintenance and fault rectification
4. Provide stakeholder engagement support to the Team Leader for Ordinance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) Engineering
5. Conduct a range of risk assessments across relevant equipment, rigs and explosive articles
6. Develop professional and technical skills within all aspects of pre-planned and reactive maintenance for a range of trials support
7. Provide a variety of support for materials used in human protection through test and evaluation trials
This role is full-time, 37 hours and fully on-site at our MoD Shoeburyness site.
Essential experience of the Gun Fitter:
8. Proven experience working with large calibre ordnance and associated equipment
9. Demonstrable awareness of risk assessment and health & safety regulations associated with large calibre weapon systems
10. Previous experience working with large calibre gun systems
11. Demonstrable experience of maintenance, fault finding and repair of various large calibre weapon systems and engineering workshop techniques
Qualifications for the Gun Fitter:
12. A recognised military large calibre armament apprenticeship, armourer qualification or equivalent experience as a large calibre engineer or armourer
13. Computer literacy including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
14. A full clean UK driving licence
