About the team/job
Training is a core activity across EMBL-EBI, involving almost every part of the organisation and coordinated by a team of 21 people. The Training Team delivers a world-recognised programme that encompasses training delivered virtually and face-to-face to a global audience alongside self-paced online learning, up-skilling of trainers and scientific visitors. Scientific Training Officers and Systems Administrators work with the Scientific Training Leads to produce and deliver scientific course content; Events Organisers, Event Managers and Marketing Officers work with the Events Programme Lead to organise course logistics and promote the programme, and Project Managers work with the Head of Training to deliver innovative projects to build capacity and Infrastructure for Bioinformatics and Data science. The EMBL-EBI programme also sits under the umbrella of the EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT) where we work closely with colleagues across all EMBL sites to deliver the EMBL Course and Conference Programme.
Your role
As Senior Events Manager, reporting to the Operations Lead, your primary goal will be to contribute to the smooth running and high standards of EMBL-EBI’s diverse and highly acclaimed programme of training and industry events. You will manage the day-to-day operations of a team of 4-6 staff who are responsible for the end-to-end delivery of training events.
The role is likely to involve some out-of-hours work, including occasional work at weekends and the possibility of some overseas travel.
You have
You will be ready to take on a managerial role, and will be able to delegate to and coach others, with proven organisational and project management skills.
* Experience in mentoring and supervising colleagues
* Proven, relevant experience in organising in-person and virtual events (ideally ranging from ten to more than 100 participants) and managing multiple simultaneous projects
* A strong service ethic with a focus on quality
* Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills and a proven ability to prioritise tasks in an international, complex and diverse working environment.
* Resourcefulness, self-motivation and resilience, demonstrating an ability to work independently and to tight deadlines, keeping calm under pressure
* A good working knowledge of office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office or Google Workspace), and communication tools (email, Slack or equivalent), online tools for virtual conferencing, and a willingness to learn other tools as needed.
* Experience with databases and event registration software (e.g. Eventsforce).
* Excellent written and spoken English language skills
* Ambition to work in an international environment
* An ability to work with multiple stakeholders and international partners, demonstrating an inclusive and respectful approach regardless of the career stage or other characteristics of those you interact with.

* A qualification in event management or business administration would be an asset.

* Contract duration: This position is a 3 year contract, renewable to a maximum of 9 years. We are looking ideally for someone who can join in February 2025.
