About us
The Reis Ferreira group focuses on understanding how the microbiota contributes to cancer treatment outcomes. Within this theme, we have an interest in understanding how gut bacteria modulate the outcomes of radiotherapy for prostate cancer.
About the role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Laboratory Technician who will be working at the Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions at King’s College London, Guys Campus. This post has been established to support research within the Reis Ferreira group. This position is for a one-year contract in the first instance. As a key player in our laboratory, you will play a crucial role in processing samples from patients on clinical studies, maintaining documentation, and ensuring the smooth operation of laboratory equipment.
The post-holder will:
* Hold a university degree in a scientific discipline or an equivalent qualification (Higher TEC/HND/C&G).
* Demonstrate hands-on experience in processing patient samples.
* Be proficient in maintaining comprehensive documentation associated with sample processing.
* Conduct routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and manage supplies efficiently.
This is a part-time post (20 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed-term contract until 30th April 2026. Key responsibilities:
Sample Processing:
* Performing aliquoting procedures to ensure accurate sample distribution.
* Conduct DNA extraction and quantification adhering to established protocols.
* Prepare samples for shipping, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
* Oversee the shipment of samples for analysis, coordinating with external facilities as necessary.
Sample Documentation and Logging:
* Maintain a comprehensive log of all processed samples, documenting relevant details and ensuring data integrity.
* Create and manage associated documentation, including sample tracking sheets and processing records.
* Implement a systematic approach to organise and archive documentation for future reference.
Communication with Multidisciplinary Team:
* Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team involved in the study.
* Provide regular updates on sample processing milestones and address inquiries from team members.
* Foster open communication to enhance the overall efficiency and success of the research project.
Laboratory Equipment Maintenance:
* Conduct routine maintenance on laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance.
* Troubleshoot and address minor equipment issues promptly, escalating as necessary.
* Collaborate with the lab manager to schedule and coordinate equipment calibration and servicing.
* Manage inventory of lab supplies, keeping track of stock levels and expiration dates.
* Place orders for supplies in a timely manner, considering project timelines and budget constraints.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
* University degree in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent qualification (Higher TEC/HND/C&G);
* Experience in human sample processing;
* Highly motivated towards research and development;
* Excellent organizational and communication skills.
* Experience in microbiome sample processing
* Experience in oncology studies
