Job Duties
Norfolk State University’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts – Fine Arts Division is inviting applicants for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art History and Art Gallery Director to begin in August 2024. The Fine Arts Division offers B.A. in Fine Arts and Graphic Design and M.F.A. in Visual Studies. The candidate will also serve as the Gallery Director of the James Wise Art Gallery at Norfolk State University.
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching 6 credit hours of undergraduate and graduate level courses in art history and will also serve as the Gallery Director for 6 hours of release time in each semester. This position supports program initiatives including curating art experiences, organizing fundraising initiatives and grants, fine arts campus as well as community visibility projects.
Minimum Qualifications
1. PhD in Art History or relevant areas (completed degree is required at the time of application)
2. Evidence of teaching experience at a comprehensive four-year college or university
3. Demonstrated evidence of experience in gallery operations
Preferred Qualifications
4. Experience in online teaching (i.e., Blackboard and Canvas)
5. Experience teaching contemporary art history with the ability to incorporate critical theory and practices within a global context preferred
6. Evidence of active research in the candidate’s area of expertise
7. Demonstrated knowledge of working with a diverse student population
