JOB TITLE : NURSE TEAM LEADER

Overview
The Nurse Team Leader will be responsible for the efficient and effective leadership of the nursing team, SVNs, and PCAs. You will work closely and collaboratively with the Head of Nursing Services (HONS), other Team Leaders, and Leads across the Practice to ensure the efficient delivery of outstanding patient care. This role requires strong, inclusive, decisive leadership, clear communication, and the ability to inspire and motivate the team to deliver the Linnaeus nursing strategy and achieve the practice’s goals. Approximately 80% of the working week will be spent undertaking operational clinical duties as part of the nursing team providing an excellent service to patients within the practice.
Main purpose & goals
1. Inspire, lead, and manage the Surgical nursing team, Anaesthesia nursing team, and Surgical PCAs to drive a gold standard culture of excellence.
2. Maintain an overview of the Surgical nursing team, Anaesthesia nursing team, and Surgical PCAs to ensure the highest standard of nursing and client care.
3. Demonstrate a high level of knowledge, understanding, and practical skills to effectively lead by example.
4. Liaise with other Team Leaders and departments to ensure efficient patient flow throughout the hospital.
5. Utilise Lead Nurses within your area of responsibility to manage the team and coordinate workflows for the day-to-day running of the clinical service.
6. Ensure that Evidence Based Nursing practice is central to the approach of the team, providing safe and effective holistic patient care.
7. Encourage and facilitate the nursing team to engage with and contribute to quality improvement activities, e.g., clinical audits and VetSafe reporting.
8. Work closely with the HONS and other team leaders to ensure strong clinical and operational performance within the nursing team.
9. Ensure the nursing team works in line with practice policy and Linnaeus business strategy.
10. Provide an efficient, courteous, and helpful service to all clients, suppliers, and external contacts in a timely manner, in line with practice policy.
11. Support the recruitment and selection of nursing staff, followed by facilitating appropriate induction, training, support, and management of new starters.
12. Support the recruitment, development, and performance of clinical supervisors and assist all clinical supervisors to ensure that standardisation training is undertaken.
13. Liaise between other nursing Team Leaders, HONS, Heads of Services, and other teams to ensure effective lines of communication.
14. Promote our services, associates, and products, both in and out of the practice.
15. Understand, contribute to, implement, and provide training on practice and group policies as appropriate.
Key responsibilities
1. Represent the nursing team at nurse leadership meetings, providing information and cascading relevant updates back to the team.
2. Work closely with Veterinary Surgeons, HONS, and non-clinical teams to ensure all areas of the practice work together effectively.
3. Ensure efficient running of the clinical service through management of the nursing team, supporting with workflow or general nursing duties as necessary.
4. Assist with OOH, Bank Holidays, and weekend cover as required.
5. Ensure nursing team members understand their roles and responsibilities and have clear objectives.
6. Ensure RVNs and PCAs have the appropriate skillsets to provide outstanding patient care.
7. Manage and maintain nursing and PCA rotas to ensure adequate resource deployment.
8. Establish surgical training for nursing and PCA teams and monitor their skill sets.
9. Achieve optimum performance and engagement from each team member through motivational methods and regular appraisals.
10. Participate in the induction of new associates, ensuring effective onboarding.
11. Lead engagement discussions with your team annually following engagement survey feedback.
12. Encourage shared learning on both practice and group levels while collaborating with the central support nursing team.
13. Motivate the team to work effectively together in a positive atmosphere.
14. Ensure patient records are completed accurately and that care instructions are followed.
15. Maintain a high clinical standard in your area regarding infection control and equipment maintenance.
16. Monitor team performance, conduct performance reviews, and provide necessary training and support.
17. Manage performance, disciplinary, or attendance concerns in collaboration with HONS and HRBP.
18. Contribute to the development of the hospital's patient flow system.
19. Shape an efficient clinical service through excellent clinical standards and leadership.
20. Ensure efficient rota management for adequate cover.
21. Manage overtime requests and address excessive claims with HONS.
22. Encourage reporting and reviewing of clinical incidents as part of the Practice Clinical Governance Policy.
23. Support Lead Nurses in developing them as leaders within the practice.
24. Promote practice and group policies within your area.
25. Maximise profit opportunities and efficiency savings within your area.
26. Assist with practice marketing initiatives.
27. Participate in external CPD for personal development.
28. Contribute to internal and external CPD/seminars as appropriate.
29. Ensure compliance in the use and recording of pharmaceuticals as per regulations.
