A 12 month fixed-term opportunity, starting July 2025, has arisen for an enthusiastic, self-motivated speech and language therapist, to join the Acute Speech and Language Therapy team within St Helier Hospital. The post is suitable for experienced band 5 or recently qualified Speech and Language Therapists. Training in dysphagia will be given if required.
This post is based in an acute hospital setting and involves working as an integral member of the SLT team alongside the wider MDT on general medical, care of the elderly, respiratory, gastroenterology and surgical wards. You will be able to develop further skills in the area of Dysphagia.
Applicants should have skills and experience in managing patients with swallowing and communication disorders. We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic SLT with a strong interest in dysphagia, high communication and team-working skills as well as effective time management and organisation skills. The department has close support networks with local community based Speech and Language therapy services, including regular journal clubs and in-service training.
The post holder will also have an opportunity to support our videofluoroscopy clinics and FEES service.
Main duties of the job
1. To be responsible for the assessment and management of a caseload of adult inpatients with acquired communication and/or swallowing disorders on the acute wards.
2. Duties will include assessment, diagnosis, therapy (both group and individual as appropriate), planning therapy programmes and discharge of patients including those with complex needs in a variety of settings.
3. To act as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and to contribute to Speech & Language Therapy input on the acute wards.
4. To be accountable for own professional action and recognize own professional boundaries, seeking advice as appropriate.
To participate in team meetings, audit and research projects on a regular basis within the Speech and Language Therapy Service.
