We are looking to appoint a highly motivated, adaptable, energetic, and enthusiastic individual with a broad knowledge of surgical/emergency nursing to work as Band 6 in an inpatient and ambulatory setting on A609.
A609 is very excited to be recruiting 1 WTE Senior Staff Nurse (Band 6) to join our well-established team in the Division of Surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI). We are also opening up this opportunity to those wanting a progression post with support and training to meet Band 6 competencies/person specification and workload. This would suit an experienced Band 5 Nurse who has an interest in management, adaptable skills, and natural leadership abilities but may need more clinical support within the A609 team and ward environment.
We are looking for a range of experience and can provide training and development opportunities. We also offer flexible working, part-time hours, or full-time hours depending on what suits the requirement of the service.
Main duties of the job
The Surgical Trauma Assessment Unit (STAU) consists of a 23-bedded inpatient unit and the Same Day Emergency Care unit (SDEC) consists of 10 assessment spaces for ambulatory patients. We provide a 7-day a week acute assessment for surgical/ Trauma & orthopaedic/ ENT/ maxilla-facial patients referred urgently either via GP or admitted via the emergency department.
Nurses will work closely with doctors, ACPs, AHPs, Clinical Site Managers, and Health Care Support Workers.
The Same Day Emergency Care unit (SDEC) offers an opportunity for nurses to triage acute surgical and trauma patients referred by GPs over the phone to support providing a service where patients are assessed and treated without the need for an overnight admission.
This role gives job variety, continued development, and involvement in exciting new projects as well as providing job satisfaction. As you build your knowledge and confidence, you will be expected to work independently and manage your own team in conjunction with the Supervisory Sister.
Job responsibilities
Within this role, you will influence progress and maintain high standards whilst developing clinical, managerial, and leadership skills in this challenging environment where no two days are the same. Experience within the surgical specialty or a similar unit environment is vital to enable you to settle into the role quickly and become a valuable senior member of the team. You will be supported in this role by the Senior Nursing team.
As a B6 senior staff nurse you will:
* Be proactive and show initiative, demonstrating excellent leadership and clinical skills to assess, investigate, and treat patients
* Act as a leader and role model, adopting a flexible approach in a role managing clinical and managerial responsibilities
* Be Nurse In Charge of either STAU or Surgical SDEC, coordinating the care of patients, accepting referrals, and managing the nursing team
* Exhibit excellent communication skills
* Engage in research and development opportunities for the service
* Demonstrate knowledge regarding governance and its importance in promoting and maintaining a safe and quality-driven environment for patients, visitors, and staff
* Take immediate action and inform the sister where performance, conduct, or attendance falls short of the expected standards
* Work in partnership with the management team to act as a united front and professional role model to the team
* Assist with and participate in the recruitment, retention, and professional development of staff

Education and Qualifications
* Current NMC Registration
* 1st Degree in nursing or health-related subject or working towards
* Qualification in Teaching, assessing, and Mentoring
* Willingness to work towards Masters level academic study
Knowledge and Experience
* Appropriate post-registration experience in surgical nursing for at least 3 years
* Appropriate proven leadership and management experience
* Proven commitment and experience, evidenced in teaching
* Experience as preceptor/practice assessor
* Recent acute assessment or triage experience
* Experience of undertaking research or audit projects
* Evidence of commitment to research-based practice or evidence of project work undertaken

Salary: £37,338 to £44,962 a year pro rata
