Job Summary
We are looking for a Operating Theatre Porter Assistant to join our team at Oldham Royal Hospital to provide a quality service to all patients, visitors, and staff throughout the Trust, by carrying out their wide range of duties, including moving and handling, in a professional manner observing all Health and Safety and departmental codes of practice and procedures.
You will ensure a timely transportation of patients to and from wards, inpatient areas, transport of medical equipment or other places of care and assess and make a transport plan for patients with medical support requirements to ensure a safe transport plan is made.
Main duties of the job
1. Assist in the development and maintenance of a safe environment in order to deliver and promote patient care.
2. Assisting with the preparation of the theatre/recovery area prior to an operating session, positioning of equipment and completing all safety checks as per policy/procedures.
3. Assisting in the preparation cleaning and checking of theatre trolleys, wheelchairs and other equipment within the theatre corridors.
4. Assist in the cleaning of the theatre as and when required.
5. Assisting in the cleaning and preparation of other appropriate areas.

Job Description
Job responsibilities
1. Maintain stock level and ensure stock rotation in all theatres.
2. Disposal of clinical waste / body parts as per policy.
3. Assist in the care of patient when transferring within the theatre department and the wards when necessary.
4. Participate in the support and care of patients requiring a wide range of procedures within the theatre suite.
5. Promote equality for patient and others respecting privacy, dignity, religious and cultural beliefs.
6. Assist in collecting and receiving patients/clients into the operating department and adhere to Operating Theatre Policy for checking in patients safely prior to surgery.
7. Support patients to maintain their interests and emotional wellbeing whilst receiving various forms of care during their stay within the operating department, reporting any changes in their condition to the senior staff.
8. Carry out all duties in accordance with National, Trust and local standards and policies.
9. Deal with telephone / bleep enquiries in a professional manner and pass on relevant information to members of the multi-disciplinary team.
10. Take responsibility for, after appropriate training appropriate to their role the correct use, cleaning and operation of medical devices in accordance with Manufactures guidelines and local policy.
11. Assist in the safe transfer of the patient to the standard of care within the Trusts Clinical Governance framework and contribute to audit where appropriate.
12. Respond and provide assistance as directed by professional qualified staff in the event of a health emergency.
13. Assist the registered practitioner in the storage of specimens.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* Care Certificate either upon appointment or within 12 weeks of commencement.
* Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy (GCSE English and Maths Grade D-G).
* Peri-operative care level 2 & 3 achieved or willingness to undertake further study.
Desirable
* NVQ Level 2 in Healthcare or a Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship already achieved.
Knowledge, Training & Experience Essential
* Experience of working with members of the public or a desire to work in the Health Service.
* Understanding of routine work procedures gained through a short induction period and on the job training.
Desirable
* Experience of working within a healthcare theatre environment.
* Experience of working within a health or social care environment.
* Experience of working within a team.
Skills & Abilities Essential
* Good communication skills.
* Basic IT skills.

* Good organisational skills.
