Convey difficult, sensitive, or undesirable information to patients, carers, staff, the public, and Trust personnel, including traumatic debriefs, adult and infant deaths, "do not resuscitate" discussions with relatives, fetal loss, and tissue or organ donation (e.g., bone, cornea, and heart valves). Lead communication within the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) on a shift-by-shift basis across the multidisciplinary team, playing a key role in liaising with external agencies daily. Ensure all communication is timely, accurate, honest, effective, and managed with discretion. Protect confidential information about patients and staff in accordance with the Data Protection Act and the Caldicott Report, ensuring personal, staff, and group compliance. Report clear, concise, and accurate informationwhether written, verbal, or computer-enteredregarding patient care and well-being. Maintain good computer literacy and typing skills and ensure these standards are upheld by all staff under your supervision. Provide patients and carers with relevant written and verbal care advice on matters related to their treatment or care. Collaborate with and lead staff in patient care, treatment, and safe discharge, offering specialist nursing advice to other team members. Regularly communicate distressing or challenging information to patients and their carers with empathy and professionalism. Act with kindness, courtesy, and a genuine willingness to assist all members of the public at all times. Serve as a positive, effective, and appropriate role model, maintaining and developing team morale, supporting colleagues, and assertively resolving conflicts. Leadership and Operational Responsibilities Work closely with the Matron and Lead Clinician to translate the vision and goals of the UTC into practice. Collaborate with the Matron to identify and implement changes that enhance nursing practice and service delivery. Oversee patient care, management, and flow throughout the UTC during assigned shifts. Maintain detailed awareness of potential 4-hour breaches, understand the Trusts implications for non-compliance, and work with the site team to meet targets and prevent breaches. As Nurse in Charge you may be required to validate breaches daily and attend site, operational, and departmental huddle meetings to represent the UTC. Have a thorough understanding of departmental, Trust-wide, national, and governmental policies, protocols, and pathways. Ensure their implementation and compliance within the department. Attend staff, departmental, and Trust-wide meetings as directed by the Matron, supporting the development and dissemination of departmental policies and procedures. Manage incidents, complaints, and undue occurrences in accordance with Trust policy, reporting them to the Matron and leading investigations when required. Undertake the duty of candour, understand the Trust's Serious Incidents process, and support the maintenance of the departmental risk register. Identify areas of risk or poor quality and address these through appropriate governance structures. Participate in health, safety, fire, and quality audits within the department. Staffing and Resource Management Plan, assess, develop, and evaluate care programs in the UTC daily without supervision. Establish and maintain named link nurse roles to enhance care quality, improve practice, increase knowledge, and reduce risk. Implement the Trusts HR policies, addressing staffing matters such as sickness, capability, and disciplinary issues in collaboration with HR and the Matron. Plan and schedule duty rotas, annual leave, and study leave. Monitor absences and the use of temporary staff, ensuring prudent and budget-conscious staffing decisions. Allocate staff resources appropriately based on departmental case mix, volume, and acuity, escalating unfilled shifts to the Matron when necessary. Maintain and update electronic rota management systems, ensuring safe staffing records and shift allocations. Stay up to date with emails and disseminate relevant information to staff as needed. Monitor staff documentation for accuracy and legibility, addressing deficiencies with remedial action when required. Ensure staff training and appraisals are up to date, conducting one-to-one meetings and managing performance independently. Support recruitment, selection, induction, and training of new staff. Other Duties Work in accordance with infection control policies, ensuring a safe, clean, and tidy environment. Liaise with security and/or police to address abusive, vulnerable, or aggressive individuals, making decisions about their removal or reentry to the department as necessary. Serve as an authorized signatory for the ordering of controlled drugs. Maintain departmental and Trust patient record systems throughout shifts. Safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of staff, patients, clients, and visitors in line with policy and statutory obligations. Manage resources effectively, monitor the economical use of supplies and equipment, and address hazards as the senior nurse on duty. Contribute to policy implementation and development affecting the Emergency Department, ensuring compliance and evaluating the need for change. Collect accurate data, participate in clinical trials and audits, and recommend changes as appropriate.
