The post holder will be expected to work with children and families with neurological conditions from onset of symptoms to discharge/transfer to adult services/end of life care. The post will be based in Newcastle but travel across the northern region for clinic, training and teaching purposes will be expected. Therefore, a driving licence is a requirement of the post.
Under the supervision of a Band 7 Nurse, the post holder will be supported in planning, delivering, and evaluating specialist care for children with complex neurological conditions. The successful candidate will be expected to provide advice and support to the GNCH, schools, respite centres, and other care providers as well as participating in the development of care pathways and protocols. The post holder will be required to lead on a specific specialty covered within the service and will be fully supported and trained to do so. It is essential that the post holder be flexible to the needs of the service and prioritise patient care and safety to achieve the highest standards of care. An expectation to participate in relevant research studies will also be required.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills as the post involves giving and receiving highly complex and sensitive information. They must be able to offer children, families, and care providers advice and support in a number of different settings with both face-to-face and telephone consultations. The ability to work independently and within a team is an essential skill to hold.
The Paediatric Neurology department at the GNCH offers and provides specialised care to children across the northern region of England. The successful candidate will be essential to the provision of these services.
The successful candidate will be expected to learn about and care for children with the following:
* Intrathecal baclofen pumps
* Vagal Nerve stimulators
* Multiple sclerosis
* Neuro-inflammatory conditions
* Neuro-degenerative conditions
* Ketogenic diet
* Complex epilepsy
* Neuro investigations
The successful candidate will also be expected to provide specialised advice and training to children, families, and caregivers on sensitive and complex issues. This is achieved through face-to-face appointments, training sessions, and telephone clinics.
The post-holder will provide training to other healthcare professionals and will be expected to participate in arranging and speaking at study days and conferences both locally, nationally, and internationally.

Qualifications & Education
* Registered nurse (appropriate to branch)
* Current NMC registration
* Diploma plus specialist qualifications / experience within specialist area; prepared to take degree level study
* Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formally Mentorship) if relevant to role
* Current driving licence if relevant to role
* Degree in health-related subject
Knowledge & Experience
* Some post-registration experience within related specialist area of practice
* Extended clinical practice underpinned by training supervision & assessment
* Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
* Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
* Evidence of ongoing continuous professional development
* Research or audit experience
* Evidence of contribution towards education and training programmes
