Senior Speech and Language Therapist- Youth Offending Team

In conjunction with the Team Leader, to plan, develop and co-ordinate the Speech and Language Therapy service to children with speech, language communication needs known to the Youth Justice Service (YJS). There is a strong support and advisory element within this role.
Main duties of the job
1. To coordinate the provision of suitable Speech and Language Therapy services in line with needs of the client base.
2. To participate in the assessment and diagnosis of children/ young people with a range of SLCN.
3. To provide advice, support, and training for a range of professionals working for the YOT team.
4. To proactively support the growth and development of Chatterbug by representing the organisation at a local/national level.
Job responsibilities
1. To assess and diagnose speech, language, communication needs (SLCN) for young people accessing YJS including those with special educational needs and those in care.
2. To develop and advise on strategies to support young people with SLCN accessing YJS, including working with young people and those who live and work with them daily.
3. To develop and implement specialist speech and language therapy treatment and programmes and to measure and evaluate outcomes.
4. To ensure that clients, parents, or carers, YJS staff, and teachers are involved in planning and prioritisation of treatment programmes wherever possible.
5. To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures.
6. To contribute to legal documents such as Education Health and Care Plans and Court Reports.
7. To adapt practice to meet individual clients' circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences.
8. To maintain up to date and accurate case notes in line with HCPC and RCSLT professional standards and organisation policies.
9. To share information with clients, carers, and other professionals, observing data protection guidelines.
10. To contribute specialist knowledge to multi and uni-disciplinary teams to ensure a client-focused approach to treatment.
11. To attend high-risk review meetings as requested.
12. To communicate complex information from assessment and treatment to clients, carers, and other professionals.
13. To make onward referrals as appropriate, e.g., Additional Health Needs Panel.
14. To work closely with clients, carers, and other professionals to negotiate and agree client management.
15. To demonstrate empathy with clients, carers, and colleagues, ensuring effective communication, particularly where significant barriers to understanding exist.
16. To respond sensitively at all times, particularly when imparting potentially distressing information regarding the nature of clinical difficulties and their implications.
17. To demonstrate expert skills in motivating clients, carers, and other professionals to engage in the assessment and therapeutic process.
18. To deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible, in line with Chatterbug policy.
19. To foster productive relationships with others who have challenging communication difficulties and may be under stress.
20. To provide specialist assessment and advice on optimising the clients' communicative environment, considering the communication skills of parents, guardians, carers, and other professionals.
21. To provide clinical advice, support, and second opinions for therapists and other professionals working with children with speech, language, and communication disorders.
22. To demonstrate independence in dealing with complex issues related to caseload management.
23. To employ counselling skills with parents/carers and clients with highly complex needs.
24. To discharge appropriately, agreeing a point of closure with the parents/carers, young person and informing other professionals as appropriate.
25. To produce reports, reflecting specialist knowledge, in a format that is easily understood by the young person.
26. To apply expert strategies to facilitate and enhance the effectiveness of communication, both verbal, non-verbal, and environmental.
27. To develop and deliver highly specialist training to others in the area of SLCN, including YJS staff and parents/carers.
28. To provide supervision and mentorship, training and support for colleagues and newly qualified therapists and assistants as per Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy guidelines.
29. To advise line manager on clinical issues of service delivery, including shortfalls and service pressures.
30. To monitor stock levels in own service area and request new equipment as appropriate.
31. To gather statistical data punctually.
32. To participate in service research as required.
33. To undertake Clinical Governance/audit projects within the local service as required.
34. To have a working knowledge of relevant procedures including safeguarding children, SEN procedures, and other legal frameworks.
35. To identify personal/professional development evidenced by Personal Development Plan/Professional Portfolio developed within an appraisal framework.
36. To demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to RCSLT Professional and Local Clinical Guidelines.
37. To take responsibility for maintaining and continually developing professional skills and knowledge in SLCN.
38. To demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice independently, with peers and mentors, to identify own strengths and development needs.
39. To demonstrate the ability to manage people with communication disorders and challenging behaviour.
40. To work within infection control and health and safety guidelines.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Valid HCPC Registration and RCSLT Membership.
* Bachelor's Degree.
* Ability to travel independently.
