We are looking for a people leader to support a multi-disciplinary team of environmental professionals through adaptable leadership and effective management of resources.
The National Environmental Assessment and Sustainability (NEAS) department oversees the effective management of environmental risk on our Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) projects and help identify and deliver environmental enhancements that leave a better place. Our NEAS Hub Teams are responsible for the input of high quality environmental and sustainability advice to the Integrated Delivery Teams for each Delivery Hub. Our input is principally at the project development stages where we ensure that the need for environmental consents and approvals is identified.
You’ll be leading an established team that’s involved in ground-breaking and award-winning work through effective collaboration across internal departments, the wider Defra group, Statutory bodies, our framework delivery partners, businesses and communities.
NEAS have various Hub Teams based across England, this vacancy is to provide assignment cover for the Team Leader role managing the East North Hub.
The team
The team collaborates with internal and external partners to deliver sustainable projects throughout their lifecycle; reducing flood risk, championing environmental improvements, resulting in added value and a greater sense of shared ownership with local communities across East Anglia and North London and Hertfordshire.
The dispersed team is comprised of Environmental Project Managers, Landscape Architects and Archaeologists focussed on mitigating environmental risk and advocating environmental benefits to deliver flood schemes that protect people and enhance wildlife.

Essential:
Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in environmental science or a related subject
Effective communication skills in a hybrid working setting
Have experience of influencing others to achieve outcomes
An understanding of the environment and sustainability sector
Have the ability to lead, motivate, support and develop a team of skilled practitioners
Be able to demonstrate leadership to deliver outcomes through others
Desirable:
An understanding of project and programme management
Experience of project team management in Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) activities
Awareness of project governance
