We are offering an exciting opportunity to lead the Speech and Language Therapy team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital as Head of Adult Speech and Language Therapy on a permanent basis for 4 days per week. You will be joining a friendly and innovative team who are passionate about delivering high quality patient care. We are looking for an experienced, compassionate, dynamic leader. An exciting clinical element to this role will be the opportunity to provide clinical leadership and management to the Videofluoroscopy service and/or the FEES service depending on experience.
The Speech and Language Therapy Team provides inpatient and outpatient services at Chesterfield Royal Hospital across Stroke, Medicine/Neurology and ENT. We are proud of our established Videofluoroscopy service and our developing FEES service.
We take an active part in research and have an Advanced Practice SLT in ENT role within the team.
Our service is part of the wider Therapies and Dietetics Care Unit within the Diagnostics, Clinical Support and Cancer Services Division.
Job purpose
To have management accountability for the delivery of the adult speech and language therapy service in accordance with agreed service objectives.
Provides professional leadership of the adult speech and language therapy service provided.
Key Result Areas
To develop and maintain a strategic vision for the speech and language therapy service.
To work in collaboration with other senior members of the Pharmacy & Therapy care unit and other Care Units to develop a responsive speech and language therapy service.
To ensure that speech and language therapy staff are aware of the objectives set for the speech and language therapy service and that these are reflected within the staff appraisal and development process.
To interpret clinical and professional policies and NHS guidance to ensure that the speech and language therapy components of the care unit and Trust plans are appropriately updated.
To build working relationships with senior clinical and non-clinical staff within the North Derbyshire Health Community to realise opportunities and benefits from joint working.
To collaborate where appropriate with speech and language therapy managers across the East Midlands.
To manage a clinical caseload providing specialist speech and language therapy intervention as a practicing clinician.
To ensure that the speech and language training needs of nursing, medical, other staff and patients are met.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT:
1. To be managerially accountable for the speech and language therapy budget, ensuring that finances are used effectively
2. To effectively manage clinical activity, waiting lists, response times, demand and capacity ensuring that the service meets standards of delivery
OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT:
1. To deliver through the senior speech and language therapy teams the active management of all aspects of
speech and language therapy services making optimal use of resources available.
2. To ensure that activity undertaken by the service is recorded accurately in the SystmOne EPR, and that data extracts are used to review and promote service efficiency and effectiveness.
3. To identify and implement innovative service developments in support of modernisation and service improvement.
4. To ensure that the speech and language service remains responsive to the needs of patients and that patients and the public are actively involved in the design and delivery of speech and language therapy services.
5. To deputise for the Head of Therapy Services as required.
QUALITY GOVERNANCE:
1. To actively involve the speech and language therapy service and its staff in the implementation and development of Quality Governance.
2. To ensure that all aspects of speech and language therapy services meet any agreed national or Trust minimum standards including those relating to clinical supervision and competency and where this is not the case to identify appropriate actions.
3. To ensure that all errors, complaints and incidents are managed in accordance with the Trust’s Incident Reporting Policy
4. To ensure that effective mechanisms are in place for both clinical and organisational audit.
5. As a senior leader to actively contribute to the operation, management and strategic direction of the Trust
6. To advise the Care Unit and the wider Trust on professional issues relevant to adult speech and language therapy
7. To represent the adult speech and language therapy service on appropriate forums within the North Derbyshire Health Community and in the East Midlands region as required. .
HUMAN RESOURCES:
1. To promote recruitment and retention strategies which ensure appropriate skills are available to the needs of service users.
2. To ensure that all staff receive appropriate professional training which is linked to the aims and objectives of the adult speech and language therapy service, and the Trust.
3. To ensure that effective mechanisms are in place to confirm the registration of relevant staff to ensure access to CPD and that staff maintain personal portfolios where required.
4. To co-ordinate and develop student placements in association with partners in education.
5. To ensure that systems are in place to identify poor performance of any type and that any individuals identified are appropriately supported and managed in accordance with Trust policy.
6. To ensure good Health and Safety practices are adopted by staff through providing a safe environment for staff, patients and visitors in the speech and language therapy department and clinical facilities.
