Description Diffusion bonding is a solid state process by which two surfaces are joined under pressure at an elevated temperature, as a result of diffusion controlled processes. A bond is regarded as being formed when new grains appear in the zone adjacent to the interface and only a few small pores remain at the joint line. However, due to the fact that metals have different thermal, physical, and chemical properties at the high temperatures, it is very complicated to set up controlling variables in the diffusion bonding process. This represents a large area of opportunity for diffusion bonding simulation to improve the process and optimise the process variables. The present project aims to carry out a systematic literature review in order to identify and critically appraise the findings of relevant peer-reviewed studies in the areas of diffusion bonding simulation. Alongside this project, a bespoke development programme will be delivered by the Institute for Aerospace Technology providing an insight into the aerospace industry and related research at UoN. Start Date: Monday 23rd June 2025 End Date: Friday 12th September 2025 Working Hours: 35 hours per week (7 hours a day, Monday to Friday). Lunch break of 1 hour (unpaid) Pay Rate: £13.12 per hour plus holiday pay Location: Approximately 3 days a week will be spent on site at ITP (Hucknall, NG15 6EU). For the remainder of the week you will be based in the Energy Technology Building on Jubilee Campus. Dress Code: Smart casual The duties will include: Production of a report and literature review covering at least (1) Solid state diffusion bonding process and its key process variables, (2) Liquid interface diffusion bonding process and its key process variables, (3) Models for diffusion bonding simulation. Generation of a research poster describing your project. Poster to be presented to internal and external delegates at the end of programme event in September. Skills and experience required for the role: This post is suitable for BEng/BSc or MEng students, on the second, third or fourth year of their programme. MSc students are also able to apply. Students from an Engineering or Science programme are preferred for this placement. Examples of team work, report writing and engineering problem solving would be recommended in your application. Access to own laptop preferable but not essential.
