Coquet Island, a small island just 1 mile off the Northumberland coast, is home to over 40,000 breeding seabirds in the summer months. The assemblage of breeding seabirds includes tens of thousands of Puffins, Eiders and large colonies of Arctic, Common, Sandwich and Roseate Terns, with the last species being the only UK colony and of global importance. What's the role about? We are looking for a seasonal Assistant Warden to join the team on the island for 4 months in the peak of the breeding season. You will help in reserve monitoring and management. Accommodation will be provided during the working week in the island lighthouse. Key aspects of the role: To assist in the day to day running of the Island by being a part of the reserve team and in the implementation of site management and monitoring of a range of bird species. Main Duties: Assist with the collection and recording of biological data relating to the reserve, primarily the main seabird assemblage on the island Productivity and population counts Ring reading of Roseate, Sandwich, Common and Arctic Tern rings in the field Monitoring presence of HPAI on the island and if present, working while wearing full PPE equipment Biosecurity monitoring Help with ringing of terns and other seabird species as required Basic site management and maintenance tasks as required for the site Contribute to the end of management and monitoring reports Help island colleagues maintain safe and healthy working practices on the site Large gull management including monitoring and scaring using devices such as Aerolaser Help ensure the accommodation is maintained in a clean and tidy state Help maintain all equipment and tools in safe and working order Other Duties: To assist with other site related tasks as required by the site warden and site manager Occasional management of reserve and residential volunteers What we need from you: Essential qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience: You will have knowledge and experience of seabird monitoring. Experience of bird handling and/or ringing. You will have a proven track record of working of completing work alone and working within a varied team. Be willing to assist with predator control to benefit ground nesting birds. Excellent data collection and data management skills. Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience: Lantra or equivalent qualification in using equipment such as brushcutter, herbicides and Rodenticides. Knowledge of servicing and maintaining machinery, tools and equipment to agreed standards. Implementing and updating health and safety records and assessments. Knowledge of biosecurity and HPAI practices Be practically minded & able to problem solve Have basic IT skills including Microsoft Office Be comfortable working on or around water and boats. Additional information: This role will involve lone working and working in remote locations. This role will require you to live on an island for 5 days a week with no access to mainland amenities during this time This role will require occasional weekend, early morning and evening working so will need someone who is able to be flexible. This is a Fixed-Term role for 37.5 hours per week for 4 months, starting in mid April 2025 until mid August 2025. The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
