Position Conditions: This full-time, permanent position of 40 hours per week consisting of 4pm to 12am (midnight) shifts, Monday to Friday, will be offered in accordance with conditions identified in the Collective Agreement between the City of Brandon and CUPE Local 69
Rate of Pay: $34.92 - $36.27 per hour (2023 Rate)
Closing Date: 11:59pm on February 11, 2025
This competition will include testing and an interview.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Truck & Transport Mechanics are responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, and repair of 300 plus units, including automobiles, emergency vehicles, public transport, public utility vehicles, light/heavy trucks, and construction equipment. Employees work under the leadership of the Fleet Maintenance Chargehand but are allowed considerable latitude for independent judgement in applying knowledge and skills to the diagnosis and repair of assigned equipment.
NOTE: This position offers a monthly tool allowance as well as a tool replacement program. The City agrees to replace broken or worn out tools during the course of employment. A tool allowance is provided monthly to each employee for the purchase of new tooling.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Perform preventative maintenance services;
* Performs inspections, repairs and safeties of buses, heavy trucks and trailers to meet the criteria of the Manitoba Vehicle Inspections Handbook
* Analyze customer’s complaints, diagnose cause of malfunctions, order parts and perform repairs;
* Ensure accurate data entry and record keeping of diagnostics into RTA;
* Communicate with other team members such as; Mechanics, Chargehand, Scheduler, Parts Clerk and user departments;
* Liaises and maintains relationships with other City departments to ensure the appropriate equipment and service is provided. Fosters a proactive and shared customer focus in addressing concerns for all City departments;
* Use sophisticated diagnostic equipment and techniques to service electrical/electronic system faults and perform component replacements;
* Service basic fuel and fuel injection systems, electrical and suspension systems, air conditioning, emission controls and power assist;
* Service and repair engines, braking systems, air brakes, steering components, drive lines and differentials;
* Disassemble, align, fit and machine parts with hand or power tools;
* Assemble, install, repair and maintain equipment involving transmission servicing, hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, heating and refrigeration units;
* Rebuild, adjust and service a variety of components such as engine pistons and connecting rods, cylinders, cylinder head valves, camshafts, crankshafts and time gears and steering components;
* Repair and replace frames, axles, hubs, tires and wheels and coupling units;
* Repair and overhaul stationary gasoline and diesel engines, pumps, and other apparatus;
* Experience using air conditioning repair equipment and automatic transmission repair software, Cummins engine diagnostic software, WABCO and Bendix ABS Diagnostic software;
* Performs routine arc and acetylene welding as required;
* Evaluates and completes emergency road service to equipment outside garage;
* Identifies mechanical equipment requiring preventative maintenance;
* Performs all work assignments in accordance with safe work practices and procedures to ensure own safety and the safety of others within the facilities;
* Completes monthly safety inspections and participates in safety meetings;
* Maintains a clean work environment;
* Ensures service delivery is of high quality, efficient and aligned with the corporate and departmental vision;
* Promote and maintain positive team working relationships;
* Road test vehicles when required; Performs related work as required.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
* Grade 12, G.E.D., C.A.E.C., or Mature High School Diploma;
* Inter-provincial (Red Seal) Journeyperson Truck and Transport Mechanic certification;
* Possess a valid and subsisting Class 3 With Air Endorsement Province of Manitoba driver’s licence or able to obtain within three (3) months of appointment;
* Hold a Manitoba Vehicle Inspection number for all vehicles excluding motor homes, automobiles and motorcycles, or able to obtain within three (3) months of appointment;
* Hold an Emergency First Aid certificate, or able to obtain within three (3) months.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
* Hold a valid MOPIA Environmental ODS certificate.

The Journeyperson Truck and Transport Mechanic works independently and as part of a team.

* Work in a shared and consultative manner with other employees (daily);
* Responsible to the Chargehand of Fleet Services.
