Howden Joinery is currently recruiting for a full-time, permanent Transport Supervisor role (Shift Rotation) within our transport team based at Howden. This role is crucial to our operations.
As a Transport Supervisor, you will have the vital responsibility of ensuring the transport operation plan is executed in accordance with all legal compliance, safety regulations, and Company policies. You will be actively supervising and co-ordinating a team of around 50 drivers, shunters, and office staff, ensuring their adherence to these regulations and policies.
Your key responsibilities will include:
1. Dispatching Drivers with control sheets, manifests, and vehicle check sheets, and debriefing Drivers as per Company requirements.
2. Ensuring all vehicles are maintained on schedule, monitoring for defects, and arranging prompt repairs.
3. Overseeing accident/incident monitoring and investigations, ensuring accurate completion of all paperwork reports within defined deadlines.
4. Proactively overseeing the site’s daily and weekly transport activity and supervising a growing team of LGV drivers, shunters, office team, and transport apprentices.
5. Facilitating communication within the transport team as well as with internal and external suppliers/business partners.
6. Preparing comprehensive written handovers for the following shift supervisor.
7. Receiving, planning, and allocating work for the upcoming days.
8. Assigning vehicles to meet delivery requirements for network activities and updating relevant parties accordingly.
9. Monitoring site operations closely to ensure consistent loading of trailers within specified timeframes.
10. Promoting consistent load security through effective driver engagement and fostering relationships with warehouse counterparts.
11. Assisting in resolving operational defects promptly during shifts, with immediate escalation if necessary.
12. Handling driver dispatch and debrief processes.
13. Managing costs to meet or exceed budgeted plans and devising initiatives to enhance operational efficiency.
14. Ensuring compliance with legal regulations such as O Licence requirements and driver tachograph regulations.
15. Managing disciplinary actions and absenteeism amongst staff.
16. Implementing and overseeing Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) and Risk Assessments (RA).
17. Monitoring and addressing near misses and actively managing safe behaviours through the implementation of corrective actions.
18. Managing the Telematics system, providing driver engagement mentoring and monitoring to achieve required driving standards.
19. Processing weekly wages for staff.
20. Managing driver hours on a weekly, fortnightly, and reference period basis, ensuring compliance with European Working Time Directive (WTD) and drivers’ hours regulations.
What do you need to qualify for the Transport Supervisor:
1. Minimum 1+ year proven transport supervisory management experience in a fast-paced, service-orientated logistics environment.
2. Excellent knowledge of drivers' domestic and European drivers’ regulations.
3. Excellent knowledge of current SOPs, Risk assessments, and safety reporting processes.
4. Excellent knowledge of Transport systems (Microlise + Kronos systems and Microsoft Office or similar).
5. Proven experience in implementing and monitoring Driver regulations.
6. Excellent communication skills and ability to work on your own and closely with Team members.
