Wytham ward is an elective surgical department based at the Churchill Hospital, covering three clinical specialties: Colorectal, Breast and Gynae-Oncology. This broad spectrum of patients provides you with the opportunity to build a wide range of skills and knowledge upon which to construct your nursing career, whilst working within a nationally recognised center for management of complex colorectal diseases., The main responsibilities of the job :
* Deputise for the ward manager in his / her absence across the full range of management responsibilities
* Contribute significantly toward the strategic and operational development of the ward / department
* Assist the ward manager with the recruitment, interviewing and selection of staff
* Promote effective communication and teamwork at all levels
* Demonstrate clinical leadership skills and evidence of specialist knowledge
* Develop, manage and monitor the performance of a team of nurses, ensuring that the highest standards of care and safety are achieved and maintained at all times
* Ensure close links with Brookes University and co-ordinate student nurse teaching and allocation., Demonstrate and promote a patient and family centred style of clinical practice.
* Be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care from admission to discharge.
* Accurately document and report to other members of the nursing team, multi-disciplinary team and family/carers regarding the care given to patients, communicating changes as they occur
* Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, and supporting the patient, family/carers and other staff as required
* Identify and discuss patient needs with the team/staff, patients, carers and the multi-disciplinary team. Be able to plan own workload.
* Demonstrate a problem solving approach to effectively execute planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised plans of care based on an person centred model of care
* Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, overcoming barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events
* Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality at all times.

* Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of an ongoing NMC revalidation.
* Minimum of 3 years acute care registered nurse experience
* Evidence of achievement on a Nursing and Midwifery, (NMC) approved Mentorship qualification.
Desirable criteria
* UK recognised Degree in Nursing relevant to post.
* Post-graduate qualification related to an area of practice., Excellent communication skills.
* Able to prioritise own workload and that of others as appropriate.
* Demonstrates ability to maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with team leaders/ward manager/unit co-ordinator.
* Acts as a role model and are able to lead by example to ensure the Trust's values and behaviours are reinforced throughout their area of practice.
* Able to supervise non-registered and less experienced staff to ensure effective care delivery.
* Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety, Able to demonstrate the ability to put patients at the heart of what you do and recognising different needs by encouraging a spirit of support, integrity, respect and teamwork.
* Shows pride in the quality of care they provide for patients and learning from successes and setbacks.
* Able to proactively support colleagues in the delivery of care commensurate with Trust values and behaviours.
