Applications are invited for the part-time post of University Constable. The principal function of the University Constabulary is to assist on ceremonial occasions, congregations, and to support the Proctors in their role. Events within the role can vary from providing assistance to the Admission of Benefactors, supporting the Honorary Degree Ceremony, and assisting with visits from the Royal Family and other VIPs.
You will be joining our team where you will work collaboratively with others within a welcoming and inclusive environment. Within this role, you will use your excellent communication skills to interact with a wide range of people during the events, including responding to queries and questions from members of the public. You will sometimes be working on your own or in small groups and will therefore be able to keep calm in challenging situations and work with minimal supervision. It would be an advantage if you have some general knowledge of the University and Colleges or have a security-related background.
You will be required to work some unsocial hours, including occasional Fridays and Saturdays (nine Saturdays per annum), Sundays, and on rare occasions, you will attend events during the evenings and throughout the night. It is essential that you are available for the Swearing-in Ceremony each year (1 October), General Admission Graduations (4 days in June/July each year), summer Congregations (end July), and monthly Congregations as a minimum. You will also be attending other VIP and ceremonial events, and we will look to you to assist the Proctors in their disciplinary duties. There is a Term-Time only standby duty rota, and you will be scheduled on for approximately 5 days each term. Due to the out-of-hours nature of the standby duties, you will need access to private transport if living outside Cambridge.
You will be sworn in to the Office of Constable, under oath, for each academic year on 1 Oct - 30 Sept. The starting date for this post is 1 March 2025.
We particularly welcome applicants who self-identify as BAME who are currently underrepresented within the University professional staff.
