Children Act 2004, The Children and Social Work Act (2017), Child Death Review, Statutory and Operational Guidance (England)(2018) are a few of the national guidance and statutory guidance which have set out to reform the existing child death review processes in England. There is a statutory responsibility that stipulates a key worker should be available for bereaved families, providing information and support throughout the child death review process, helping them to navigate the various systems and who can signpost them to sources of support.
As a Specialist Nurse post, the successful applicant will be working for the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, and should have up-to-date knowledge of the current child death legislation, professional practice and guidance as well as extensive experience in managing families through grief and bereavement. The post holder will be required to work collaboratively with colleagues across a wide range of multidisciplinary teams including medical and nursing, in hospital and the community, primary care, social services, police, education and the voluntary sector.
This post-holder will also be a key part of the Child Death Review Process Team (CDRP). Child Death Overview Panels (CDOP) review any child death (except for termination and stillbirths) from birth to 18 years of age.
Main duties of the job
1. Provide specialist advice and support to all staff in respect of child deaths and to bereaved families, providing information and support throughout the child death review process, helping them to navigate the various systems and who can signpost them to sources of support.
2. Work collaboratively with the ICB and Directors of Public Health in identifying leading causes of childhood deaths across Wolverhampton and to work with internal and external partner agencies to address areas of concern: identify areas of need and inform the work of commissioners for future planning of children’s services.
3. Work with local partners in establishing robust processes, systems and governance arrangements in the management of child death reviews in line with national guidance and legislation.
4. To be an active panel member of the Child Death Overview Panels. To be the representative on other regional panels as required.
5. Co-ordinate and contribute to the organisation of and participation within the Joint Agency Review meetings, Child Death Review meetings, Hospital Trust Mortality Meetings, National Perinatal Mortality Review Tool meeting and others meetings as necessary.
