JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Humanities and Arts Department and the Professional Writing program invite applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Writing and Rhetoric to begin August 2025. The Teaching Professor track at WPI is a full-time faculty position and affords the possibility of reappointment and promotion.
Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience and a record of excellence in teaching undergraduate writing and rhetoric courses at the 1000- and 2000-level, strong evidence of professional engagement, and a demonstrated passion for developing engaging and inclusive writing pedagogies for first- and second-year undergraduates. Candidates should be motivated to teach writing to STEM students (though prior experience at a STEM institution is not required).
JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsibilities:
1. Teach 8 courses per academic year (two courses per seven-week term), with a focus on existing courses targeted at first- and second-year students
2. Advise student projects, including Professional Writing majors, on their course planning and senior-thesis projects
3. Participate in service to and initiatives of the Professional Writing program, the Humanities and Arts Department, and the university
Requirements:
4. Ph.D. or terminal degree in Professional/Technical Writing, Composition and Rhetoric, Writing Studies is preferred (terminal degree in other relevant fields considered)
5. PhD or terminal degree in hand by the time of appointment
6. Successful classroom teaching and advising experience at the university level
7. Clear promise of continuing professional growth and engagement
8. Ability to work creatively and collaboratively across disciplines with faculty, staff, and students of various experience levels
