This post will provide a specialist service to Lung Cancer patients throughout their care pathway including the overarching responsibility for the support of patients living with and beyond cancer supporting the Targeted Lung Health Check programme.
Main duties of the job
Support patients/families during the diagnostic process, treatment phase and terminal stages, and facilitate breaking bad news sessions between clinicians and patients.
Conduct a full assessment of a patient/family's needs including holistic, physical, psychological, social, spiritual aspects of care and formulate a plan of care to meet those needs.
Work as part of a multi-professional team to deliver enhanced clinical practice to a specific client group and participate in education, audit and application of evidence-based practice within the specialty.
Provide highly complex emotional support, advice on symptom control, information regarding the disease to patients, relatives and health professionals. Act as Key Worker between patients and families and the lung cancer team.
Make decisions on referrals to other health professionals to facilitate optimum care. Co-ordinate care with other professionals, in acute Trust or community so that care is organised efficiently, and seamless care is maintained.
Act as a resource to those involved in lung cancer care, providing knowledge on the physical, psychological, and social impact of the disease.

The post holder will work towards and with supervision from the Lead Lung CNS: Provide a specialist service to Lung Cancer patients throughout their care pathway including the overarching responsibility for the support of patients living with and beyond cancer.
Act as a key worker and point of contact for patients, carers and the multi professional team relating to lung cancer to ensure an expert Clinical Lung Cancer Nursing Service that provides specialist nursing care for all lung cancer patients, including those with complex problems.

Job responsibilities
Maintain own patient case notes and provide written documentation in medical and/or nursing notes.
Attend and participate in the weekly Lung MDT meeting, contribute to the discussion, act as an advocate. Work with Lead Lung CNS to ensure decisions are effectively coordinated and communicated to other health professionals or to the patient.
Provide up-to-date relevant written information to patients and families regarding lung cancer, its diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care.
Professional leadership
1. Provide a credible source of specialist clinical knowledge and advice, taking an active role in self-development, reviewing own performance, identifying own needs, and taking active measures to meet those needs.
2. Provide ongoing education for patients and their families about all aspects of their illness/treatment.
3. Participate in the formal and informal teaching within the hospital to a range of health care professionals and contribute to educational and training programmes as requested / appropriate.
4. Participate, where appropriate, in the education of patients and the general public.
5. Maintain an awareness and understanding of relevant, up to date research studies within the clinical field.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
1. Participate / facilitate study days relating to Lung Cancer.
2. Act as an educational resource on lung cancer care for healthcare professionals both in hospital and the community.
3. Provide education to patients and carers in relation to lung cancer.
4. Incorporate teaching and learning principles into professional practice.
5. Act as a role model or mentor when appropriate.
RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND AUDIT
1. Be involved in local/national research proposals to develop lung cancer services nationally.
2. Disseminate research findings locally and, if required, at national level to produce an evidence base for lung cancer nursing on behalf of the Trust and the Cancer Network.
3. To be aware of and disseminate recent advances in lung cancer.
4. Participate in the collection of statistical information to inform the operation activities of the lung cancer service, specifically in relation to the National Lung cancer Audit (NLCA), working with Cancer Data Manager as required.
COMMUNICATION
1. Communicate sensitive and distressing information to patients and relatives daily. This may include information concerning diagnosis, prognosis, recurrence, or impending death.
2. Utilise a wide range of advanced communication skills to address the complex needs of patients and their families.
3. Assess barriers to understanding during complex interactions.
4. Communicate the special needs of patients and families to those responsible for their direct care.
SKILLS
1. Use advanced skills to make patient and family needs assessments and deliver expert care.
2. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of national developments within lung cancer.
3. Maintain knowledge base to provide clinical palliative care.
4. Provide a non-pharmaceutical intervention to help patients with problems of breathlessness.
5. Provide an intervention aimed at reducing anxiety and depression in patients with lung cancer and helping them to cope with the illness.

5. Be able to concentrate for long periods for report writing, research activities, audit and patient contact.

Person Specification
Experience and knowledge
* Significant, relevant (post registration) experience within speciality area.
* Experience and knowledge of working with either respiratory patients, palliative care or cancer patients.
* Experience of teaching in a range of clinical settings.
* Demonstrates the ability to implement change and promote best practice.
* Experience of audit and research.
Qualification(s) and Professional Training
* NMC registration.
* First Level degree or equivalent.
* Recognised teaching qualification.
* Relevant post registration course in respiratory, palliative care or cancer.
* Health assessment qualification or working towards.
* Non medical prescribing qualification or working towards.
* Evidence of relevant post registration education relevant to speciality.
