Band 4 HIV - Hepatitis Results Tracker/Senior Support Worker

This role will involve contributing to the overall activity of the HIV service, working alongside colleagues in the Opt-out BBV testing and linkage to care team. They will support the development and training of future band 3 HIV Nurse or Health advisor support worker roles. They will also work with the wider HIV and blood-borne virus team and the HIV MDT and Hepatitis MDT to support services for patients receiving specialist HIV care within the Birmingham Heartlands HIV service. The role entails seeing patients in a variety of settings including hospital, community venues, or their own home.
Main duties of the job
1. Liaise with laboratory teams at the QEH, BHH, and GHH laboratories run by UHBFT but also the UKHSA to get automated lists of all "non-negative" HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C tests including reactive, indeterminate, rejected samples, or requests with no samples received and work to resolve each of these.
2. Ensure reactive results are either confirmed positive or confirmed negative.
3. Prioritise individuals with true positive results and encourage them to engage with clinical services.
4. Repeat indeterminate results.
5. Inform patients where tests are not done (rejected/or not sent) and offer tests at a variety of clinical or non-clinical settings.
6. Independently run phlebotomy lists when required to do these tests and inform patients of results.
7. Perform HIV and hepatitis point of care testing or fingerpick BBV testing when venous access is not possible.
8. Visit individuals in the community, in conjunction with other members of the BBV MDT or community groups to test individuals not engaging with the service.
9. Keep high-quality records of these activities.
10. Provide feedback to the line manager and to the BBV lead to work on improvements in service provided by this role.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* NVQ in Customer services or Health and social care or equivalent experience and training.
Experience
* Experience working with HIV positive or Hepatitis positive patients.
* Extensive experience in giving highly sensitive clinical results to patient groups, such as the results of sexually transmitted infections tests.
* Extensive experience working with HIV or sexual health patient management systems.
* Experience interpreting HIV and Hepatitis serological or molecular test results.
* Experience and understanding of the HIV and AIDS Reporting systems (HARS).
* Experience of dealing with the Public/Customer service experience.
* Experience of working in an administrative role with a proven track record of problem solving.
* Experience of managing complex diaries using own judgement when dealing with conflicting appointments and priorities.
* High proficiency in working with a range of Microsoft Office packages (e.g. Word, Excel, and Outlook).
* Experience of working in a busy environment independently, exercising judgement and decision-making skills.
Additional Criteria
* Ability to undertake blood-borne virus point of care testing.
* Experience with dried blood spot testing.
* Experience in dealing with highly confidential sensitive medical information, such as sexual health diagnoses.
* Excellent communication/customer care skills both written and verbal demonstrating sympathy and compassion.
* Excellent keyboard/IT skills ensuring accuracy.
* Highly developed prioritisation skills.
* Ability to deal professionally with enquiries from staff, patients, and visitors.
* Confidentiality and tact necessary for dealing with people at all levels and the most complex and sensitive information.
* Ability to pay attention to detail where there are predictable interruptions to the work pattern.
