Our client is seeking a Planning Lawyer on a contract basis. This role is integral to providing efficient and cost-effective legal services to various departments including the Planning Team, Highways Team, and Specialist Planning Team.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct cases in all Courts and Tribunals, representing the Council in Civil and Criminal Courts and before Tribunals and Inquiries.
2. Instruct Counsel and other experts as necessary.
3. Draft legal documents, including section 106 agreements, to support client departments in fulfilling their functions.
4. Attend and advise at Committee and Sub-Committee meetings related to the Planning & Corporate Team's work.
5. Attend and advise at meetings of working parties and officer groups as a representative of the Planning & Corporate Team.
6. Provide legal advice to departments served by the Planning & Corporate Team as needed.
7. Keep clients, Members, and officers informed of new legislation and case law relevant to their operations.
8. Investigate, research, and report on significant matters within Legal Services and undertake directed projects.
9. Provide legal comments for reports to Cabinet Members, Cabinet, and other Committees.
10. Assist client departments in understanding the implications of new legislation and case law.
11. Undertake Planning Inquiries concerning refusals of planning permission by the Council.
12. Initiate investigations, research, and report on important matters within the Planning & Corporate Legal Team and undertake directed projects.
13. Comply with Legal Services Lexcel and time recording requirements at all times.
14. Provide training to Members and client departments served by the Planning & Corporate Legal Team.
15. Carry out any other duties as are commensurate with the level of this post.
Job Requirements:
1. Experience in employment law and town planning law.
2. Strong understanding of legal principles and procedures in civil and criminal courts.
3. Proven ability to draft complex legal documents effectively.
4. Excellent advisory and representation skills in meetings and inquiries.
5. Ability to work collaboratively with various departments and stakeholders.
6. Strong investigative, research, and analytical skills.
7. Commitment to keeping abreast of new legislation and case law.
8. Professional qualification in Law.
