The Role
The Mathematics Department aims to develop effective problem-solvers and critical thinkers who think creatively about the world around them and apply their mathematical thinking to a range of exciting and challenging problems. The Mathematics Department is inclusive with nearly every pupil in the School studying Mathematics and the department is committed to nurturing those who excel in the subject and those who require more support in order to succeed and make progress.
The department follows the IB's Middle Years Programme in Key Stage 3 and presents pupils for the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics (4MA1) qualification. Last year, over 60% of pupils achieved 7-9 grades at IGCSE. The department currently offers three programmes as part of the International Baccalaureate in the Sixth Form: Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (Higher Level and Standard Level) and Mathematics Applications and Interpretation (Standard Level). The department consistently achieves the strongest value added results in the School with over 80% of pupils securing 5-7 grades in all Mathematics courses last year.
The department offers a number of enrichment activities throughout the year including participation in external competitions and benefits from close relationships with colleagues at the University of St Andrews.
About St Leonards
St Leonards is a friendly and forward-looking independent, coeducational, boarding and day school situated on an historic campus at the heart of the university town of St Andrews. The school enjoys an unrivalled location - there are sandy beaches, world-class Links golf courses, and historic sites on its doorstep.
St Leonards delivers the inspiring, globally-recognised International Baccalaureate curriculum for pupils aged five to 18, and was the first school to be accredited as an all-through IB school in Scotland. It is one of just two schools in the UK to actively offer all four IB programmes.
The youngest pupils follow the Primary Years Programme, which goes hand-in-hand with the vibrant Outdoor Learning programme at St Leonards. This is followed by the Middle Years Programme and (I)GCSEs. In the Sixth Form, pupils choose between the Career-related Programme and the Diploma Programme.
St Leonards enjoys a rich sporting heritage, and continues to boast a strong record of achievement with pupils representing the school nationally in various sports. An exciting calendar of trips and activities ensures pupils leave St Leonards equipped with the skills required to succeed in today’s ever-changing world.
