The Vascular Science Unit at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) is looking for a Clinical Vascular Scientist to cover an 18-month maternity period. Applications are invited from those with accreditation from the College and Society for Clinical Vascular Science (CSVS) or HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist in Vascular Science.
We are a team of seven clinical vascular scientists, one STP trainee, and one vascular science practitioner apprentice working with a team of three scientific support associates. This job will include working across both our Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital sites. We provide an adult's and children's vascular science service Monday to Friday. UHBW encourages flexible working conversations which will be offered to the successful applicant on appointment.
Main duties of the job
* Perform a full range of vascular diagnostic and surveillance ultrasound duplex scans including carotid, upper and lower limb arterial and venous, true and false aneurysms, temporal artery, thoracic outlet, bypass graft and stent surveillance, endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), fistula scans
* Perform ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) and toe-brachial index (TBI) assessment
* Independently interpret and report results using specialised vascular knowledge, producing an overall diagnosis and identify and act on incidental and/or urgent findings appropriately
* Provide direct teaching, training and supervision to STP and vascular practitioner trainees
* Actively participate in and support colleagues in clinical research, audit, innovation and service evaluation projects
* Lead the day-to-day running of the department, prioritising workload, supervising junior staff, work allocation, overseeing the appointment diary, and liaising with colleagues from all disciplines

Knowledge and Experience
* Ability to independently perform, interpret and report a full range of vascular ultrasound examinations
* Theoretical knowledge of vascular diseases, haemodynamics and the physics of ultrasound
* Ability to triage and prioritise vascular science workload
* Understand the potential hazards and bio-effects of ultrasound and aware of the national and international ultrasound scan safety guidelines and able to operate safely
* Experience in training and supporting others including STP trainees and other healthcare professionals
Skills and Abilities
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
* Demonstrate skills in problem solving and dealing with complex clinical issues
* Proficient in IT skills to be able to electronically report, record and analyse data
* Knowledge of research, audit and service evaluation skills and techniques
* Good presentation skills able to prepare and present at local and national meetings
Qualifications and Training
* Science Degree (BSc level or higher)
* Accredited Vascular Scientist (AVS) with The College and Society for Clinical Vascular Science (CSVS) OR NSHCS STP Certificate of Completion with HCPC registration
* HCPC registration AND accreditation with the College and Society for Clinical Vascular Science (CSVS)
