Job Purpose:
To provide high-quality quantity surveying services across a range of civil engineering projects, including but not limited to highways, bridges, rail, and marine structures. This role will involve all aspects of the commercial lifecycle of projects, from pre-contract to post-contract stages.
Key Responsibilities:
Pre-Contract:
* Prepare and submit accurate and competitive tenders, including taking-off quantities, cost analysis, and risk assessments.
* Analyze tender documents, identify potential risks and opportunities, and develop mitigation strategies.
* Negotiate with subcontractors and suppliers to secure the most favorable commercial terms.
* Provide cost advice and support to the project team during the design and planning stages.
Post-Contract:
Monitor and control project costs, including tracking actual costs against budgets and identifying potential cost overruns.
* Prepare and submit interim valuations to clients and subcontractors.
* Manage subcontract agreements, including issuing subcontract orders, processing payments, and resolving disputes.
* Prepare and submit final accounts.
* Identify and pursue potential claims and variations.
* Ensure compliance with relevant contractual and legal requirements.
Other Responsibilities:
Maintain accurate records and documentation.
* Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
* Provide commercial advice and support to project managers and engineers.
* Contribute to the continuous improvement of commercial processes and procedures.
* Stay up-to-date with relevant industry standards, legislation, and best practices.
Essential Skills & Experience:
* Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within the UK civil engineering sector, with a strong understanding of relevant contracts (e.g., NEC, JCT, FIDIC).
* Degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related construction discipline.
* Excellent knowledge of construction principles, methods, and materials.
* Proficiency in the use of relevant software, including estimating software, project planning software, and spreadsheet software (e.g., Asite, BIM 360, Excel).
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
* Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
* A proactive and results-oriented approach.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
* Membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
* Experience with specific civil engineering disciplines, such as highways, bridges, or rail.
* Experience with BIM (Building Information Modeling) and its application to quantity surveying.
* Experience with claims preparation and adjudication.
