NUPAS are recruiting for a Medical Director. This is a permanent position. The Medical Director is a member of the senior management team and is expected to contribute to the overall strategic direction of the company. The post-holder will ensure the highest standards of care & quality to our patients through clinical leadership.
You will be expected to commit to at least 32 hours per week.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide clinical advice and information to the senior management team and advise and assist the CEO in the execution of their responsibilities for the management of the Organisation in relation to clinical matters.
The Medical Director will become the nominated Responsible Officer for all Independent Medical Practitioners undertaking work on behalf of the company who are connected to NUPAS.
The Medical Director is the accountable officer for the demonstration of adequate assurance on quality and clinical governance for services provided by the company.
The post holder will also ensure that systems are in place for the development of quality and the identification and minimisation of risk where standards fall below that required in conjunction with the Clinical Director and the Head of Nursing.

Job responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
1. Contribute to the corporate management of the company by working with the Executive team, SLT and Staff to shape and support the development of the company’s strategic direction through the development of clinical pathways and policies as well as managing performance and minimising the risk to achieving the strategic direction.
2. Contribute to the activities of the Organisation in the delivery of high quality care to all patients.
3. Ensure the Organisation receives advice on all clinical matters relevant to the effective and efficient delivery of patient services.
4. To be consulted and involved in the purchase of new medical equipment.
5. Ensure that there are systems and processes in place for effective management, appraisal and revalidation in conjunction with the Head of HR.
6. Ensure that robust systems are in place for reporting concerns involving a doctor’s conduct and performance.
7. Ensure, in conjunction with the Head of HR and CEO, that concerns about conduct and capability of clinicians are managed in accordance with national and Organisational procedures.
8. Ensure, in conjunction with the Head of HR, that there is adequate and appropriate assurance provided to the Board regarding the continuing fitness to practice of all medical staff with Practicing Privileges within NUPAS.
9. Provide professional advice to the Organisation in respect of complaints and disciplinary procedures for Independent Medical Practitioners and Medical Employees.
10. In conjunction with the Head of HR, lead the Doctors annual appraisal process ensuring the appropriate development and quality assurance of the process. This will include ensuring all medical staff are appropriately revalidated and that the Organisation obtains evidence of this.
11. The Medical Director is the lead for clinical governance in conjunction with the Clinical Director and Head of Nursing and has responsibility and accountability for all quality and clinical governance issues. This will include ensuring that effective systems are in place to maintain the highest standards of clinical governance and full compliance with the provisions of the Care Quality Commission essential standards to ensure patient safety.
12. Develop, in conjunction with the Clinical Director, effective organisational arrangements that enable the Organisation to meet its strategic aims within a framework of strong, effective governance.
13. In conjunction with the Head of Quality and Safety, ensure that appropriate systems, structures, performance management arrangements and training are in place to promote sound governance including awareness of clinical governance, learning from incidents and including input into customer service/complaints where relevant.
14. Monitor clinical performance through an appropriate range of clinical indicators, implementation of recommendations from root cause analyses, serious untoward incidents/accidents and external reviews.
15. Improve whole system clinical governance to ensure that effective clinical governance is in place across the whole patient journey.
16. In conjunction with the Clinical Director, Head of Patient Quality & Safety and Head of Nursing, ensure that incidents are investigated appropriately on behalf of the CEO and that incident reporting systems are managed effectively.
17. Work with the Organisation to develop, implement and monitor the effectiveness of a strategic approach to clinical engagement. This includes the ongoing development of the Medical Consultative Committee and ensuring the agenda reflects all matters relating to clinical governance.
18. In conjunction with the Head of Nursing, Clinical Director and Head of Quality & Safety, develop an approach to clinical risk management fostering a culture of openness and transparency ensuring robust systems are in place to identify, assess and minimise the exposure of the company to clinical risk.
19. Provide professional advice across a broad range of issues within the Organisation.
20. Provide professional management and guidance to all independent medical practitioners.
Person Specification
Experience
* Substantial clinical experience at consultant level or equivalent.
* Experience in medical management.
* Good reputation as a clinician and clinical leader with a proven track record of producing high quality results in the management and leadership of clinical services.
* Experience of building organisational capabilities.
* Experience of managing clinical governance.
* Previous Medical Director experience.
* Previous experience working within Abortion Services.
* Previous experience working within a Sexual Health Service.
Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration.
* Medical Qualification and appropriate Royal College membership or Fellowship.
* Postgraduate Medical Qualification.
* Evidence of continuous learning and professional development.
* Unblemished registration with the GMC.
* Management Qualification.
* Post Graduate Qualification in Clinical Governance.
