Job Description:
Brief Description
You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day.
A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As an operative, you’ll work outdoors in a small team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our operative community comes from a variety of backgrounds, and this might be the first time you’ve considered a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.
If you make the grade, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.
Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the GTRM IMC25 contract.
About the role (External)
Operatives can specialize in various disciplines; for this role, you’ll become a specialist in Signalling & Telecoms. You’ll work with equipment including signals controlling train movements, level crossings, and points systems. With willingness to learn, you’ll develop a range of technical skills across manual, electrical, and digital equipment.
Our operatives work outdoors in all conditions, day or night. You’ll be involved in demanding manual work, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Being safety-focused, respectful of rules, and a team player is critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds.
You matter to your team
You’re essential to your team. You show up early, leave last, check and prepare equipment, and drive the team between sites. Daily, you’ll support equipment maintenance and perform lookout duties to ensure safety.
You matter to us
Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We provide training to develop technical and non-technical skills. Transitioning from another industry, our structured training will give you the confidence to build a rewarding rail career. Today’s operatives can become tomorrow’s technicians and leaders, with clear career paths.
We value your transferable skills, including:
* Team-working: Collaborate closely with your team for safe, efficient work.
* Communication: Maintain good communication for safety and effectiveness.
* Proactive planning: Be punctual, prepare equipment, and anticipate team needs.
* Working under pressure: Stay calm outdoors in all conditions, near moving trains.
* Following rules and instructions: Respect safety rules and challenge unsafe situations.
* Willingness to learn: Continuously update your skills and knowledge.
Additional information:
* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends with changing patterns.
* Outdoor working: Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
* Safe working: Subject to drug, alcohol testing, medical, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
* Driving: Must hold a category B driving license to operate Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute times: Reside within 60 minutes of the location.
