Established in April 2016, the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) delivers nuclear capability to deter threats and protect our nation. The DNO oversees all defence nuclear business (excluding operations) and is responsible for providing nuclear deterrence; sponsoring the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (all the organisations, programmes and people that sustain the UKs nuclear deterrent); and advising on UK nuclear policy, planning and international co-operation on nuclear matters. The UKs independent nuclear deterrent has existed for over 60 years to deter the most extreme threats to our national security and way of life, and that of our NATO Allies. To ensure that we have a credible and capable nuclear deterrent for as long as the security situation requires, we are building four new nuclear armed submarines known as the Dreadnought Class and replacing our nuclear warheads. These renewal programmes will utilise world-leading technology and are a showcase in science and engineering, highlighting the prowess of British industry. In 2021 the United Kingdom, United States of America and Australia announced the programme for Australia to acquire conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarine capability through the AUKUS trilateral enhanced security partnership. At the heart of this programme is the AUKUS Policy Team who are responsible for delivering critical policy related outcomes for the UK and the wider international partnership. Within the team, there are three areas: programme policy focused on export licensing and non-proliferation; workforce, looking at ensuring that the UK and Australia have the people and skills necessary to deliver the programme, and; international policy, responsible for domestic and trilateral communications, senior briefing and engagement cross-government and internationally. This role sits within the programme policy and workforce areas. Job description This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of a trilateral defence programme across policy and workforce development. The post involves: Cross cutting responsibilities Providing secretariat and operational support to both UK and trilateral working groups Identifying, tracking, and mitigating risks and impediments for the areas of responsibility Leading on communications/engagement for these areas across the wider Government community Working with the AUKUS Programme Management Office to ensure that the workstreams are feeding into programme governance structures.
