About VPI VPI is a UK-based power company, providing energy to the National Grid. We are part of the UK’s pathway to Net Zero, complementing the increase in renewable energy to power homes and businesses. Our portfolio includes hydrogen and carbon capture projects to help lower emissions and develop a future for decarbonised, dispatchable and flexible generation in the UK. VPI has c.3GW of operational capacity in the UK with a further 600MW under construction. The Graduate Scheme: The two-year graduate programme will provide the candidate with thorough knowledge of all of the VPI sites with a particular focus on the Electrical Engineering aspects of the Immingham site, with a view to expanding their professional capabilities and knowledge in order for them to achieve chartership and further. The programme over the two years will be based on Electrical Engineering and part of the central engineering team within VPIs operational business. As a graduate in the Electrical Engineering team, you will be supporting and delivering projects, operational improvements and the required governance to enable reliable deployment of the generation portfolio in the UK and Ireland. The role will incorporate placements with other teams in the operational business to provide the breadth and depth of knowledge required for large power station operation and engineering: - Undertake a minimum of 10 weeks at different plants (Damhead Creek, Kent; Rye House, Hertfordshire; Shoreham, Sussex; Blackburn, Lancashire and Immingham, Lincolnshire). Gain a clearer understanding of how the plants are operated. This will include carrying out operational routines, familiarisation with the Safety Rules process and identifying plants and assets. The remainder of the programme will be tailored to the graduate through a mix of formal training, coaching and on the job training. The programme will include a number of objectives for each placement. The candidate will be expected to prepare presentations demonstrating how these were delivered and the key learnings. The candidate will be required to join the IET on either the Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer route once they have been accepted on the programme. The Role: Provision of Electrical Engineering for designated plants and equipment based at Immingham Power Stations, however deployed across the VPI fleet. Support the Electrical Engineering team to deliver cost effective short, medium and long-term Electrical Engineering solutions for the operational plants and support the development of new plants. Provision of planned and breakdown maintenance using in-house resources, permanent contractors and external service providers. Ensure that all statutory requirements relating to the Electrical systems on site are undertaken and effective record keeping is implemented. Accountability Statements: The post holder will be expected to undertake a wide range of tasks within their level of competence. The following will be included: Ensure consistent high levels of Safety and House Keeping. Support implementation of Technical Risk Management covering Plant Status Review, Plant Modifications, Engineering Standards, Gensip Guidance and Strategic Spares. Deliver Electrical Engineering improvements to plant from specification to commissioning through VPIs governance processes. Act as technical authority in relation to design standards and codes of practice. Prepare, tender and execute major contracts in support of Electrical Projects and Maintenance requirements of the stations. Deliver Engineering Best Practice across all stations. Ensure all Electrical Engineering issues are progressed effectively. Provide Electrical Engineering support to the Maintenance teams across the fleet. Provide supervision of Electrical Maintenance work carried out during plant overhauls. Assist in the implementation of the Engineering strategy in line with the business plan. Proactive and creative approach to fault diagnosis and problem solving. Support failure investigations of plant items. Occasional overseas travel for factory acceptance testing for new equipment/apparatus and due diligence of new supplier facilities. Assist in the preparation for Electrical Engineering budgets. Participation in the preparation for and delivery of major plant overhauls. Maintain interfaces with suppliers, contractors and other parties. Participate in work activities at different locations and travel within the business when need arises. Desired Qualifications and Skills: Educated to Degree standard or equivalent qualifications and experience. Experience with Power System Analysis tools e.g. PowerFactory would be an advantage. Advanced MS Office skills with the ability to analyse and manipulate data sets. Ability to handle multiple work projects running together as the business need arises. A positive 'can do' mentality, self-motivated, setting the right behaviours. An ability to think laterally and flexibly to deliver solutions. Good communication skills, able to interact effectively with contractors, senior management and other external stakeholders. Desire to learn about the UK power market. Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple deliverables. Right to work in the UK. Valid Driving License. Relocation is not available for this role - Must be within commutable distance to Immingham.
