REPORTS TO
Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV) is a long-established joint venture between two global heads in the delivery of critical infrastructure, Balfour Beatty 50% and VINCI (50%).
The scope of the company is general contracting and construction work, along with any associated services related to large selected Design and Build projects, either public or private for which it can bring clear and strong added value.
Role Purpose
Responsible for conducting independent inspection on construction works and associated records to ensure that BBV can demonstrate compliance to all approved designs, national and international standards and specifications, HS2 works information, standards and contract technical requirements.
Inspections are conducted on own BBV construction sites and supply chain premises.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team; providing independent inspection guidance to the project team and interfacing with the client and other stakeholders. Key responsibilities include:
1. Helping in the development and production of ITP’s.
2. Conduct inspections within their own discipline.
3. Prepare and submit reports of inspections and findings.
4. Engage with the team to make technical assurance part of business as usual.
Interfaces
INTERNAL: BBV & HS2 teams, design teams, construction teams
EXTERNAL: Customer, Designers, Sub-Contractors, Industry bodies, Suppliers
Accountabilities
1. Assist the Quality Manager to ensure inspection and test plans are in place.
2. Ensure systems are in place, in conjunction with the Project Manager as appropriate, which allow the required specification to be clearly agreed with customers, customers’ technical representatives, project, sub-contractor supply chain.
3. Ensure systems are in place to allow sample and benchmark plans to be established and agreed with customer, and sub-contractor supply chain.
4. Assist in developing specific project / task inspection and test plans.
5. Undertake assurance that the Quality Plan/ITP is being followed and that requirements are being met.
6. Conduct inspection activities with own discipline areas and in accordance with ITP/Checklists for the work.
7. Witnessing and sentencing of all site inspections within their disciplines.
8. Prepare and present written and or verbal reports of inspection activity and raise any non-conformance relating to the works or requests for departure from specification/design.
9. Assist the Quality team in dealing with external auditing governing bodies to maintain existing certification and continuous improvement.
10. Provide quality improvement performance measures and recommendations and share best practice.
11. By using the principles of quality assurance, and where appropriate technical Integrity, ensure the customer requirements are clearly understood and that Quality Control mechanisms are in place that provide assurance that the asset and/or service delivers as designed/required.
12. Help the delivery of business stream quality programs and actions.
13. Guide the establishment of a continuous improvement culture.
14. Undertake specific investigations and/or report on quality related issues as required.
15. Drive efficiencies through early project involvement and explore options to provide lean construction by understanding customers’ needs and expectations.
16. Seek to understand and implement the appropriate digital toolset to progress the project governance and quality assurance/ measures on the projects.
17. Coordinate all site inspections with the site subcontractors.
18. Prepare nonconformance reports to the QA manager and assist in developing corrective actions.
19. Assist the quality manager and construction team in resolving any discrepancies and ambiguities.
20. Establish and report against quality performance KPIs. Analysing their results and reporting causes of failure to project management.
21. Contributing to the continued improvement of quality performance through performance review and identification of appropriate training/coaching.
22. Demonstrate the BBV behaviours.
23. Ensure a relentless focus on Health & Safety.
Experience and Criteria Required
The following qualities/ experience are essential:
1. Experience of Major Civil Engineering projects.
2. Experience of construction in the UK.
3. Knowledge and experience of working to UK and international standards and codes of practice.
4. Proven track record in Quality Control and independent inspection.
5. Experience of working in a construction environment, with Mechanical and Civil knowledge.
6. Build strong relationships with delivery teams and project managers.
7. A formal qualification in Quality Management e.g. Diploma in Quality Management (UK Chartered Quality Institute, British Standards Institute or equivalent) or inspection such as CSWIP etc.
8. Qualified Welder CSWIP 3.1 or higher.
9. Competent user of modern office computer systems e.g. Microsoft Office.
10. Has an ability to gather, analyse and evaluate facts.
11. Pays attention to detail and sees things through to completion.
12. Can deliver reports orally and written in an objective and persuasive manner.
13. Has good interpersonal and communication skills.
14. Is a self-starter who manages their own time and seeks to add value to their function.
15. Is able to work within a multi-discipline team.
16. Able to command respect across the business and within the Function.
17. Is good at building relationships and can influence effectively. Can demonstrate initiative and resilience.
18. Driving Licence.
