Description We are currently looking for a Lead Economist to join our Innovative Devices Function within the Healthcare Quality and Access group. This is a full-time opportunity, on a 14-month fixed term contract basis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites. We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 8 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 12 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly. Who are we? The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research. The objective of the Healthcare Quality and Access portfolio is to drive quality and critically appraise benefits and risks to inform robust decisions on healthcare access including accelerated access pathways to medicines and medical devices. It will do this by bringing together a fusion of our capabilities across both medicines and medical devices to enable licensing and market access, as well as ensuring compliance with regulations and standards. The Innovative Devices function works to provide pre-market support and to facilitate a smooth passage to market access. This is particularly aimed at innovative products across MedTech, including diagnostics and digital, or where there is higher associated risk. The function will ensure that the UK has supply of new and advancing medical devices, including software as a medical device, novel implantables and diagnostics, and is leading work to develop the new regulatory framework for medical devices. What’s the role? Following the UK’s departure from the EU, the MHRA is developing the future regulatory framework for medical devices in Great Britain, building on its 2021 consultation. The post holder will undertake the required economic analysis and associated activities to support the Head of Regulation and be a key player in the continued development and implementation of the future medical device regulations. Working in collaboration with colleagues within the team, across the Agency and wider government departments as required, and liaising with external stakeholders, both in the UK and internationally. This is a 14-month full time fixed term contract. Key responsibilities: Provide analytical support to the Agency’s decisions on planned legislative changes, through undertaking impact assessments. Provide economic analysis and support to colleagues who are designing regulations, preparing business cases, or examining other policy areas such as fees. Provide analytical support to those designing consultations and support the interpretation of their findings. Act as the lead economist contact for the Agency and ensure evidence-based policymaking is embedded throughout the Agency, including making sure that colleagues are drawing upon the most relevant data and evidence.
