THE FACILITY Portishead Open Air Pool is run by a charity (Portishead Pool Community Trust – “the Trust”) who took on the management of the pool in 2009, after North Somerset Council drew up plans to close it. Café Lido, which adjoins the pool, is a separate trading entity the profits of which support the running of the pool. The Trust has increased annual swimmer numbers from under 10,000 before 2009 to around 40,000 or more each year, and it is committed to further growth. Estimated Café Lido visitor numbers are in the region of 35,000 per year. The pool receives no regular subsidy from the public purse. It is funded primarily from the sale of swim tickets and income from Cafe Lido. There is a staff team of around 30 during peak season, across the café and lifeguard teams, and the trust benefits from a considerable number of volunteers who take on a variety of roles year-round. The site is situated in a stunning position on Portishead Esplanade, and benefits from considerable local community support as well as attracting visitors from much further away. It retains a strong media profile and is well connected to the wider UK lido network. The pool opens for heated swimming from April to October (and over Christmas and New Year) and opens on a reduced hours basis for cold water swimming from October to April. Café Lido is open throughout the year – every day in Summer and 5 days per week from October to April.
