Associate Healthcare Scientist in Reproductive Science
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly patient centred team at Salisbury Fertility Centre. A well-established centre of 20 years, offering a full range of laboratory diagnostic and assisted conception techniques, including IVF, ICSI, microTESE, egg, sperm & embryo cryopreservation, including a large NHS Fertility Preservation program, along with an active egg and embryo donation programs. Salisbury Fertility Centre also runs a patient embryo research program with Manchester University Hospital Trust. We are involved as a training centre for the national ‘Scientist Training Program’ having successfully mentored 10 graduates within the scheme.
The applicant will provide laboratory assistance and administrative support to all relevant aspects of the clinical laboratory treatments as required, under the supervision and direction of clinical scientists.
The position is part time 28 hours per week
Key Responsibilities:
* Greets and instructs patients and donors attending Salisbury Fertility Centre to provide a semen sample.
* In accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and under the direction of more senior staff,
1. To work using sterile technique to prepare culture medium for use and set up culture systems for human gametes and embryos.
2. Undertakes semen assessment.
3. To participate in duties involving Liquid Nitrogen after undertaking training in Safe Use of Liquid Nitrogen.
4. To assist with the maintenance and safe use of laboratory equipment including recording maintenance procedures performed and any corrective actions undertaken.
5. Cleaning of laboratory environment and equipment.
* Quality Management, assisting with audit, document control & quality control/assurance.
* Liaises with patients and the multidisciplinary team; including taking messages and booking appointments; updating addresses; sending letters and emails.
* Monitoring/maintaining consumables and equipment.
* Assisting with the donor sperm procurement process, imports/exports and management of stored gametes/embryos.
* Regulatory Compliance.
Qualifications and Experience:
* Minimum academic requirement is 3 A levels including one or more Science subjects.
* Suitable practical laboratory experience with relevant and/or transferable skills.
* Good attention to detail and focused.
* Good IT skills and knowledge of common computing packages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages and databases.
* Previous experience working in a licensed fertility centre.
* Previous experience speaking with patients.
* Previous experience of performing semen analysis &/or aseptic technique.
Salary: Band 4 £26,530 to £29,114 a year per annum pro rata
Working Hours: 28 hours per week
This part-time Healthcare Science associate role will work, in collaboration with the Salisbury Fertility Centre (SFC) team, to provide an assisted conception and fertility preservation service with exceptional patient centred care. Supporting the laboratory team with dish set up, semen analysis, cryostorage monitoring and monitoring/maintaining consumables and equipment. The successful candidate will work within departmental policies and procedures and in line with the Trust’s values and behaviours.
The post holder will perform a range of administrative, scientific and clinical activities for the provision of services licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).
