Construction Managers, also often referred to as site managers, are responsible for making sure that building projects are completed safely, on time, and on budget. This means managing all the practical aspects of a build, which will tend to require liaising with all manner of building professionals across various disciplines, including surveyors and architects. Construction Managers can work across a number of different key projects groups, ranging from residential and commercial to environmental and infrastructure builds.
Hiring and managing staff is also a major part of a Construction Manager’s responsibility, and they are expected to be on-site overseeing day to day tasks. Ensuring that goals are both set and met, and quality standards maintained, are also key aspects of this role. This tends to mean Construction Managers split their time between ‘hands-on’ work and background management. The following skills and qualifications are beneficial for this role:
* Construction management, project management, or civil engineering degrees
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Strong leadership
* IT and numeracy
* Good knowledge of relevant building methods
* Awareness of health and safety practices and legislation
