At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer.
Cancer Research UK is looking for a Business Development Manager to join our Cancer Tools department. To be successful in this role, you’ll need to come with a background in business development and commercialisation in a life science reagents or biotech/pharma (or similar organisation) role, or experience of commercial life science licensing in a technology transfer role.
About the team
CancerTools.org is the world’s largest non-profit technology transfer organisation dedicated exclusively to research reagents. It forms part of Cancer Research UK, the world’s largest independent cancer research funder, providing in excess of £350M grant funding annually.
This role sits within the Out Licensing (OL) team, which is responsible for facilitating the use of our reagents across research, development, diagnostic and pre-clinical platforms. The OL team is accountable for processing the licensing and royalty streams generated from the commercialisation of research tools.
What will you be doing?
As a Business Development Manager in the OL team, you will be responsible for negotiating and completing license agreements with commercial end-users. Throughout the negotiation process and after signature, the postholder will be expected to provide excellent customer service which will include liaising closely with the CancerTools laboratory, finance and logistic teams.
This is a great opportunity for a candidate looking to make an impact within our Research and Innovation directorate's commercial arm. CancerTools.org brings in millions for our life-saving research; you have the chance to use your skills and experience to have a tangible effect on beating cancer.
Key duties include:
* Managing relationships with life science, pharma and biotech companies; developing new business leads, negotiation, execution and management of commercial deals.
* Processing of licensing enquiries, ensuring leads are followed up in a timely fashion.
* Completing and assisting the out-licensing team with the completion of licenses and other commercial agreements necessary to exploit research tools.
* Capturing comprehensive notes on key terms and contract deliverables across internal data systems, including customer relationship management systems, IP management systems and inventory management and finance systems.
* Optimisation, tracking and continuous improvement of the deal pipelines, focusing on transactional efficiency.
* Supporting other CancerTools teams where necessary.
* Supervising and mentoring (leading to line management as agreed with the Senior Business Development Executive) of CancerTools’ Business Development Associates.
* The preparation and delivery of business reports in conjunction with management teams for internal and external stakeholders.
* Assisting the in-licensing team in conducting freedom to operate assessments in identifying any third-party intellectual property rights using scientific sources as well as patent search software.
* Representing the out-licensing function of CancerTools at external events and conferences to build customer relationships and new leads.
What skills are we looking for?
* BSc (or equivalent work & industry experience) in a Life Science or other relevant discipline, ideally oncology or technology-related. An MSc or PhD would be considered beneficial.
* Relevant experience of business development and commercialisation in a life science reagents or biotech/pharma (or similar organisation) role, or experience of commercial life science licensing in a technology transfer role.
* Demonstrable track record of success in the commercialisation or sales of life science technology, ideally in the research tool space including account management, lead acquisition, negotiation of licenses, etc.
* Practical and/or commercial knowledge of the application of research tools such as hybridoma cell lines, antibodies, transgenic mice, plasmids, cell lines and small molecules as tool compounds in academic and commercial research environments.
* Broad knowledge and awareness of research tool types and applications (preferably within the oncology sector).
* Detail-oriented individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Excellent communication, relationship building and stakeholder management skills across all seniorities.
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and can work independently and as an effective team player when required.
*Please note that there is an element of travel, both national and international, involved in this role.
