We are seeking an outstanding person to be our Deputy Head (Pastoral). The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will build on Rugby’s considerable pastoral strength and our ‘Whole Person, Whole Point’ ethos to enable us to meet our ambition of being the ‘Boarding School of Choice.’ The successful candidate is likely to aspire to Headship in the medium term.
The Deputy Head (Pastoral), will play the central role in designing, implementing and monitoring the pastoral strategy of the School. They will line-manage the Housemistresses and Housemasters (Hms) providing inspirational leadership for this group and ensuring that, through the House teams, every student benefits from a supportive and nurturing environment.
At the heart of our approach to pastoral care is the House system. There are seven boys’ boarding and six girls’ boarding Houses, together with a boys’ day House and a girls’ day House. Each boarding House is home to approximately 50 students, typically with 10 in each year group. The House is a home away from home and acts as a springboard into wider school life. Every House has a resident Housemistress or Housemaster, a resident Deputy, a resident matron and 24 hour matron cover. All teachers live on site and are tutors in a House. They have approximately 10 tutees whom they meet on a one-to-one basis every week, as well as eating meals with them regularly and seeing them as a group.
Rugby School is a diverse and inclusive community, committed to fostering collaboration, curiosity and expertise to uncover the best in every student and member of staff. Equity and service are fundamental to our practice, inextricably linked to a restless desire for excellence in all aspects of School life.
The School is a boarding and day school in full operation seven days per week including evenings during term time. Pastoral, co-curricular, cultural and sports activities take place outside normal day-school hours. All full-time staff are expected to make a full contribution. Accommodation is provided for all full-time teaching staff, worth between £12,000 and £30,000 p.a. depending on family size.
