Postdoctoral Research Associate – National Oceanography Centre, Southampton
National Oceanography Centre, Southampton
Salary: £28,200 – 32,430 (Band 6)
Full time (37 hours per week) / Part Time (hours subject to negotiation)
Fixed term (2 years) / (contract length variable for part time roles)
About the role:
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated scientist, with experience in physical oceanography and its role in climate, to carry out Lagrangian analyses of drifter trajectories (observed and modelled). You will diagnose freshwater pathways originating in Arctic and Greenland melt water using drifters deployed on the shelves around Greenland. You will then use the observed and modelled pathways, and additional datasets, to identify processes by which freshwater crosses off the continental shelf and into the deep ocean in the subpolar North Atlantic.
You will work as part of the TERIFIC team (a new EU-funded project called Targeted Experiment to Reconcile Increased Freshwater with Increased Convection), within the Ocean Circulation and Processes subgroup at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. You will gain observational and analytical skills for Lagrangian and other observational datasets. The wider TERIFIC project also uses autonomous platforms (gliders and surface vehicles) for ocean observing.
Career development will be supported through personal development and mentoring.
About you:
You will have a PhD in physical oceanography with experience in oceanographic observations and their analysis. You will have a good knowledge of ocean dynamics and strong quantitative skills, good communication and interpersonal skills, and a publication record appropriate to your career stage. You will have an interest in presenting your results at national and international conferences. Participation in fieldwork expeditions (anticipated for 2019/20) is desirable but not required.
Other information:
A full time position will be offered at 37 hours per week on a fixed term appointment for two years. Part time hours will also be considered, up to a maximum fixed term appointment of five years.
The starting salary for this position will be between £28,200 and £32,430 per annum (Band 6). Depending upon skills and experience, additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates.
For part time posts, the salary will be calculated on a pro rata basis and all part time employees will have full access to NERC benefits.
