A maternity cover post in Frailty assessment unit (FAU) for Band 6 sister/charge nurse posts. The successful candidate will be required to work closely with the Ward Manager, Modern Matron, Consultants, and Support Mentors and Ward nursing team.
The Band 6 sister/charge nurse is a key member of the leadership team and will role model the behaviours required for the Pathway to Excellence of Leadership, Compassionate Leadership, Quality of delivery, audit and records, Well-Being, Professional Development in clinical supervision, mentoring and coaching, and Shared Decision Making engaging all staff in the educational strategy and delivery.
The Band 6 delivers the clinical training strategy in line with CQC, NHS, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust and Royal College of Nursing under the guidance of the Band 7 Ward Manager. They will provide the operational learning and training required to meet the unmet educational needs derived from incidents, patient feedback, compliments and complaints. The role will be interesting, varied, challenging but also extremely rewarding.
Main duties of the job

Frailty assessment unit has a very dedicated nursing and medical team. Patients are admitted to the ward from the emergency department, GP surgeries, and cinapsis. As a ward, we are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated Registered Adult nurse to join our dynamic, close knit team. You should ideally have a wealth of experience in Care of the elderly & Frailty and experience as a mentor/educator with a mentoring/teaching qualification. Previous experience as at Band 5 in the specialty would be advantageous. The ability to lead the team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care with the multidisciplinary team.
You will be expected to identify and bid for externally funded clinical and leadership courses through identification of skills gaps and the provision of continuous professional development for all team members. The Band 6 sister/charge nurse will help drive improvements for safety and quality and provide the training required to meet the unmet educational needs from incidents, datix, patient feedback, compliments and complaints.
The Band 6 sister/charge nurse is accountable to the Ward Manager and Matron for educational assurance and will be required to use ESR and Health Roster to facilitate competency records.
To communicate effectively especially where patient ability to do so is compromised. An ability to disseminate contentious and delicate information appropriately. To lead and deliver safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using equipment and resources safely and as appropriate. To administer medication and treatment within Procedure for the Ordering, Prescribing and Administration of Medication Guidelines. To deliver and receive information which may cause emotional distress to all parties. Participate in mentorship and educational programmes for students, those new to the ward and other members of the team. To adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and professional code of conduct. To assist the Ward Manager and Matron in the implementation of policy and service development.
To undertake and support the Ward Manager and Matron in recruitment, retention and performance related issues, including being regularly responsible for the supervision and mentorship for unqualified/qualified staff and students. Support Ward Manager and Matron for clinical area in the management of budgetary control and resource management including duty rotas and skill mix requirements. To input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer based system and maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records. To respond to junior staff members with Patient Public Involvement ensuring it is integrated into service delivery.
To provide clinical leadership that inspires and motivates others. To work with the Matron/ward management team ensuring that appropriate staff working in the ward environment have the knowledge and skills to provide expert care to the acutely ill patient. To liaise with other members of the team to ensure policies and protocols are in place to facilitate expert care of acutely unwell patients. To be actively involved in the setting up and maintaining of educational programmes that ensure advanced knowledge and skills amongst the nursing team.
