We currently have a vacancy for a Head of Assets (Vehicles, Plant and Equipment). Reporting in to the CFO, this role will be responsible for developing and delivering asset management strategies, ensuring the efficient maintenance and improvement of our Traffic Management (TM) equipment, and driving innovation in asset lifecycle management.
Current portfolio includes a fleet of 1,000 vehicles, 3,500 temporary traffic lights and VMS plus 36 depots of TM equipment (signs, cones etc.)
This role will be hybrid, ideally based in our office in Milton Keynes but requires UK travel and therefore flexibility to meet business demands is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement a comprehensive asset management strategy aligned with business objectives, ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of all assets.
• Oversee asset condition assessments, long-term investment planning, and risk-based maintenance strategies to optimise asset performance and longevity.
• Develop and implement clear policies and processes to control and maintain physical Traffic Management Assets.
• Help the business identify where there are opportunities for better utilisation, ensuring utilisation is tracked and basing decisions on meaningful data.
• Work with the business areas operational leaders to minimise loss, through stolen, broken or under-utilised assets.
• Development of Traffic Management KPI’s and targets.
• Provide analysis of inventory and utilisation, directing where assets could be re-distributed to promote efficiency.
• Work with the Win Work Centre of Excellence to ensure that innovation linked to winning work is identified and assessed.
• Stay abreast of competitor movements and supplier innovation to help us remain competitive.
• Work closely with leaders across the business to create a comprehensive inventory of all Traffic Management assets to build a picture of what we own and where this is based.
• Analysis of the entire lifecycle of assets through reporting and data, such as age, defects, utilisation, purchasing etc.
• Analysis of spend and any “hotspots”, determining with Operations the reasons for loss or the need to decommission assets from particular areas. Work with Operations to look at strategies to minimise this.
• Ensure that there is an optimal level of assets to meet the operational delivery needs alongside growth strategies.
• Work with operational leaders to minimise unnecessary spend, through sharing of resources and maintenance where appropriate rather than buying new assets
• Work with procurement teams to ensure that any purchasing of new assets provides best value for money.
• Regular and direct links with the Regionally based operational teams to provide advice and guidance, ensuring that they are working consistently to best practice and policy.
• Ensure successful relationships across the business and with key managers.
• Be an active member of the extended leadership team.
• Be a trusted coach and advisor to all business areas, enabling regional teams to take actions to succeed.
• Create and promote a culture of asset sharing and proactive asset management to ensure best utilisation across the businesses and minimise spend and downtime of assets.
• Establish and maintain strong working relationships with suppliers to ensure value for money and excellent customer service levels.
• Line management for the internal Service Centre, Facilities & Leasing, Procurement & Fleet teams
• Fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement
Skills and Experience:
• Extensive experience in asset management within the highways, infrastructure, or transportation sector.
• Strong knowledge of asset lifecycle planning, risk-based maintenance, and investment optimisation.
• Proven ability to lead and influence stakeholders at all levels.
• Expertise in data analysis, asset management systems, and digital tools for infrastructure management.
• Excellent financial acumen with experience in budget management and cost control.
• Familiarity with relevant highways regulations, standards, and industry frameworks.
• Strong leadership skills with experience managing stakeholders and teams and driving performance improvements.
Desirable:
• Degree in Civil Engineering, Asset Management, or a related field.
• Chartered status with a relevant professional body (e.g., ICE, CIHT, IAM).
