What is the Role?
Working as part of our multi-disciplined teams, we have a range of opportunities for students to support projects across our Transmission business. We're at the forefront of high-profile projects which are ensuring our transmission network is structurally sound, operating safely and efficiently and providing sustainable and reliable energy to all.
We have ambitious net zero targets, and our business is growing to help us achieve our strategy. We're looking for students who can bring fresh ideas, new skills and creative thinking, to deliver innovative solutions to help us reach net zero. This is an exciting time to join SSE; you have the power to make a change and help us build a better, more sustainable world of energy for you, your family, the community you live in, and for generations to come.
Our Transmission Engineering summer placements provide real hands-on experience through a 12-week placement in one of our engineering-based teams. Throughout the placement, you will have the support of a business mentor and buddy, who will provide guidance and support to enable you to reach your full potential.
Our summer placement students work collaboratively in a variety of contexts while also taking ownership of their role by working under their own direction to drive action forward. There will also be networking and presentation opportunities, specialist sessions, and support from our graduates.
About our Teams
HVDC Centre: We are looking for Electrical Power Engineering students to support the power system studies to de-risk the deployment of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission technologies to deliver our net-zero targets. Over the next decade, the electricity transmission network that we operate will be dramatically reshaped by HVDC to integrate massive offshore wind power to achieve net-zero. Our team of power system experts are key to enabling and de-risking this journey. We are seeking students studying electrical power engineering. This team is based in Cumbernauld.
Marine Engineering: A relatively new function within SSEN Transmission, established just over 2 years ago, to be ready, and indeed be a major part of the "Net Zero" race in the UK. We have an increasing portfolio of substantial Marine Installation projects for at least the next 10 years, including the installation of critical national infrastructure and its ongoing protection. The team is building the capacity for "best in class" offshore cable installation projects, putting a team together to manage all aspects of marine delivery, Safety, Logistics, Vessel Assurance, and Survey support throughout the lifetime of the marine infrastructure's lifespan. We are looking for students studying geosciences, construction management, or logistics management. This team is based in Aberdeen or Glasgow.
What do I need to join?
Our opportunities are open to students who are in their 2nd year of their degree onwards and will graduate between 2026 and 2028.
We'd love you to have some practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for the energy sector, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You'll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges and should have a genuine interest in SSE and the prospect of a long-term future with us.
