Applications are invited for a full-time locum consultant post in gynaecological oncology with the aim to convert it to a substantive post.
Birmingham became home to one of the first gynaecological cancer centres in the United Kingdom in the 1970s and has been instrumental in the development of gynaecological oncology as a profession. Over the decades, our service has evolved resulting in national and international recognition for the high-level care provided by the multidisciplinary team. We have built a strong portfolio in surgery for patients with advanced ovarian cancer, recurrent cancers, and vulval cancer. Our Centre has a strong research history with an in-house academic programme in conjunction with the University of Birmingham.
The post holder will be expected to work in a team of four clinical Gynaecological Oncologists and two academic-clinical Gynaecological Oncologists, supported by a multidisciplinary team including four on-site CNSs. The Team has a strong portfolio in ultra-radical ovarian cancer surgery, pelvic exenterative surgery, and minimal invasive surgery. The post holder is expected to participate in this work. Our robotics programme is well established, and we recently started our HIPEC programme. Our Team has strong links with the regional Sarcoma Centre, as well as colorectal, uro-oncology, and hepatobiliary surgeons. Mentoring for the newly appointed consultant will be available within the team.
The Cancer Centre is currently hosted by City Hospital but will move to the Trust’s state-of-the-art new site, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, in November 2024. Our Centre covers four outreach clinics and unit MDT meetings in Greater Birmingham and Walsall; the post holder will be expected to cover one of these clinics and a unit MDT meeting.
The Cancer Centre Team is committed to improving and developing the service to provide the best possible care for women with gynaecological cancers in Birmingham and the West Midlands. The Team is highly research-active, and the post holder will have the opportunity and will be expected to participate in audits, clinical research, and represent the Centre in national and international forums.
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care are at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.
Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens this year and will provide care to our local population from first-class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH. If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continue your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.
We have three strategic objectives:
1. Our People: to cultivate and sustain happy, productive, and engaged staff.
2. Our Patients: to be good or outstanding in everything we do.
3. Our Population: to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives.
The Pan-Birmingham Gynaecological Cancer Centre has a strong subspecialty training programme and trains two subspecialty trainees. The Team is supported by clinical research fellows, an FY2 trainee, and an advanced surgical care practitioner. The Gynaecological Oncology Team provides 24/7 emergency cover for gynaecological oncology patients with no formal commitment to the obstetrics or general gynaecological rota.
Birmingham is host to numerous excellent schools, including top grammar schools in the country, and is a family-friendly, affordable city with a vibrant cultural life.
Applicants for this post are required to have CCT or equivalent (or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT, at the time of interview) and entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology, with full GMC registration.
