The Children's Unit is seeking to recruit a hard-working, highly motivated, and dedicated individual to join the existing ward clerk team within the children's unit. The unit comprises 33 inpatient beds and a paediatric assessment area. The successful post holders will rotate throughout the children's unit and will be expected to provide cover for colleagues.
We are looking for someone who can work autonomously, prioritise their workload, and work well within our team. The ideal candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively with members of the public, both face-to-face and over the phone, as well as all members of the multi-disciplinary team. You must be able to work in a calm, logical, and methodical way, multitasking while dealing with frequent interruptions; you must demonstrate effective communication and organisational skills.
The successful applicant will be expected to work Monday to Friday, totaling 37.5 hours per week. The location of work is between the main children's ward reception and the paediatric assessment area. The team currently comprises two others who cover Monday to Friday between the children's ward reception and the paediatric assessment area, working closely together to support each other.
Main duties of the job
To promote a customer-focused approach that is a responsive and effective first point of contact (in person or by phone) for patients, healthcare professionals, and other statutory organisations both internal and external to the Trust:
* Receive patients and relatives in a friendly and courteous manner and provide relevant information clearly and understandably. Orientate patients and relatives to the environment and available facilities.
* Answer all telephone enquiries, taking and relaying messages politely and helpfully, taking action as appropriate.
* Liaise with nurses, doctors, GPs, and other team members, obtaining and communicating necessary information accurately to assist in providing quality service for patients.
* Maintain an efficient filing system for tracking health records.
* Maintain the admissions book, inpatient board, and patient details/appointments on the patient administration system efficiently, ensuring timely and accurate information is available at all times on patients.
* Support nursing staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team in the efficient and courteous discharging of patients, being aware of and assisting in maintaining Trust quality targets regarding waiting times.

Qualifications
* Evidence of good general education to perform administrative duties.
* Previous experience of working in the NHS or similar healthcare setting (patient/customer focused environment).
Skills
* Basic keyboard skills.
* Ability to perform basic functions on Microsoft Office - Word, Outlook, Excel.
* The ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to patients and staff at various levels, including on the telephone.
