Main duties of the job
The Paediatric spinal team are delighted to be offering a secondment for an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee Band 6/7 Nurse Specialist to join the team at Southampton Children's Hospital.
We are very much a nurse led service, providing care, guidance, support and education, therefore it is essential that the candidate has experience working within a Paediatric spinal setting. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop specialist skills and become a competent member of our team they will have extensive support from our nurses and clinicians.
Some of this development will be through participating in joint consultant and nurse-led clinics where they will learn how children and young people are clinically assessed, diagnosed and treatment options discussed. As well as ward based work and general management of the service including the waiting list.

ABOUT THE TEAM
The Paediatric Spinal service accepts patients from across the Wessex region a population of approximately 8.4 million. It covers Outpatient clinics as well as supporting inpatients on ward G3.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Working with the existing multidisciplinary team you will be responsible for:
1. Practicing at an advanced level to provide in-depth knowledge on the care pathway and complex needs of the patient group to deliver personalised care.
2. Take responsibility for the initial contact with patients/carers from the time of referral to provide specialist nursing advice, practical and psychosocial support.
3. Holistically assess and identify complex health and psychosocial needs of individual patients, and plan programmes of care to meet these needs, in partnership with patients/carers and colleagues.
4. Manage a patient caseload, to agreed referral/discharge criteria, and act as key worker. Effectively working in partnership with other professionals and referring patients to other practitioners as required.
5. Deliver knowledgeable nursing, health and social care to patients in agreed practice settings, working as part of nursing teams and in partnership with ward and departmental clinical leaders.
6. Act as advocate for individual patients and the client group. Communicate with patients in ways that empower them to make shared decisions about their health and health care and use advanced communication skills to impart sensitive, complex and potentially distressing information to patients and carers.
7. Provide appropriate information and education to patients and their families to promote health and encourage self-care and participation in the planned programme of treatment and care.
8. Maintain adequate patient documentation to NMC requirements for all patients seen and advice given in any practice setting and collate and record clinical activity/data collection as required.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential
* Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC register
* Degree qualification, 120 credits at L6 or possess an equivalent knowledge to be assessed through evidence of relevant specialist training, experience or portfolio
* Post registration qualification within area of speciality.
* Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies
* Provide evidence of supporting /managing a range of learners in practice
* Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
* Registered as an independent prescriber
Desirable
* Registered on MSc Pathway - completion of HTPA Competencies
* Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed
* Palliative care course
* IT training
* Change Management, clinical practice development.
