We’re looking for well-versed Design Operations leader to propel our Design Operations and Design Systems to the next level of maturity.
Based in Media City in Salford Quays, you’ll join a passionate multi-disciplinary Experience Design team that’s focused on creating the best experiences for our customers.
You’ll use your superpower of stakeholder management to ensure that our design process is clearly communicated across delivery managers, product managers, subject matter experts and engineering managers to name but a few.
Working closely with our product design team you will ensure that our design system is maintained, established and ultimately ready to support our ambitious digital transformation.
You’ll help to establish career development paths for our entire design team and helping create individual career pathways for all team members.
The role
1. Your goal will be to establish a highly efficient design process that generates high-quality outputs and making sure that our wider team are aware of any changes will be crucial to your success.
2. You’ll build strong ties with the wider team to help drive the success of our design system.
3. Working with your design principal peers and the Head of Experience Design, you’ll redefine our design process by working with our product management and engineering stakeholders to ensure that we are able to maintain the pace of SAFe agile.
4. Managing the business aspects of design and freeing up designers so they can concentrate on design work instead of details like budgeting and hiring.
5. Overseeing and maintaining the tools and kit that the team require is a given, but the real focus is on managing a huge and complex Design System that acts as the heart at the centre of the team.
6. Investing in and creating a design culture within the team that helps everybody in the organisation understand the value of good design.
7. Looking after the procurement and responsibility of our design tools such as Figma, Asana and Supernova.
How you’ll help us make health happen
1. You’ll determine what tools the team need to work efficiently and standardise the tooling and systems used, as well as keeping close to new tools in the industry and make sure the team adopt them.
2. Lead the education, implementation, and evolution of Bupa’s digital brand guidelines.
3. Help to manage the ongoing development of our Bupa ‘Anatomy’ Design System help to prioritise the roadmap.
4. Champion inclusive design in our design process ensuring that we have a standardised procedure for how each design discipline considers accessibility in their workflow.
5. Create a culture where team members share the knowledge generously with others with candour and respect.
6. Help to evaluate team’s efficiency by ensuring meetings and ceremonies are streamlined and attended when needed.
7. Monitor our design critiques to ensure that designs are executed to the highest quality and design processes are being followed.
8. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of an existing design process using the DesignOps framework.
9. Reduce inefficiencies in the day-to-day workflow for the design team.
10. Work with the Head of Experience Design to create job descriptions and share responsibility for recruitment and candidate interviews.
11. Be responsible for onboarding new team members, including equipment, introductions and ensuring business processes are part of a streamlined new employee experience.
12. Define clear metrics of success and ensure designers align with them.
13. Track design team case study wins and help to socialise these frequently to help build the case for user-centred design.
14. Oversee the people management and quality standards of Design Operations and Design Systems team members.
15. Establish strong cross-functional partnerships with other areas including IT services, Procurement and Facilities.
16. Evangelize design, by helping everybody in the organization understand the value of good design and translate the language of design to other departments.

1. Someone who believes design is more than just aesthetics and pretty pictures and that great design should create experiences for users that are meaningful, relevant and where possible delightful.
2. Obsess about the detail and have a huge passion for delivering quality work.
3. Displays an understanding of responsive web design, accessibility and UX methodologies.
4. Takes an interest in advancements in technology and techniques in design, taking inspiration from industry leaders and encouraging development and collaboration within the team.
5. Skilled in industry standard software including Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite.
6. A collaborative team player with brilliant communication skills.
