Job Summary
Following further expansion of our Medical Retina service across University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, dynamic experienced ophthalmic nurse or AHP to join our team.
The successful candidate will become one of our medical retina practitioners and extend their ophthalmic knowledge and skills. The role involves working in the intravitreal injection service administering treatment and alongside Ophthalmology Consultants in the delivery of medical retina care across the Trust.
This role is only open to staff who have a recognised governing body. Applicants must provide a registration number to proceed on the completion of their application.
Main Duties of the Job
Post holder will be professionally accountable maintaining standards and professional practice set by Trust Policies/Procedures/professional guidelines, NMC/General Optical Council/British and Irish Orthoptic Society/Health and Care Professions Council.
1. Maintain a portfolio of evidence of clinical skills and competency associated with the specialty, working to an agreed job plan.
2. Provide expert evidenced-based specialist assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and discharge of patients within the appropriate sub-speciality service. Be a point of contact for assessment, information, and advice for patients, families, and carers; and to staff involved in the care of patients.
3. Contribute to practice development through auditing, reviewing, updating, and developing clinical guidelines/procedures and policies, supporting analysis of data relating to patient outcomes and experience, and supporting quality and safety assurance processes.
4. Support professional development through supervision, assessment, and role modelling; function as a facilitator, supervisor, and mentor to teach other staff.
5. Monitor clinical practice standards, audit, research, and teaching to continually improve care and patient experience.
6. Ensure safe and effective clinical practice to enhance the patient's experience while delivering organisational objectives.
7. Undertake training when required supporting service needs such as post-operative cataract assessments.

Qualifications
Essential
* Professional Registration (GOC, NMC, HCPC)
* Evidence of post registration CPD/Post registration qualification e.g., ENB 346 or equivalent (OCCCF)/Medical Retina (Professional Certificate) or equivalent experience with a commitment to undertake.
Desirable
* Non-Medical Prescriber/Supplementary prescriber/willingness to undertake - where applicable to the role.
Experience
Essential
* Significant experience working at band 6 level or equivalent as an Optometrist/Orthoptist/Registered Nurse within a background in treating patients with eye-related disorders and conditions.
* Evidence of the ability to revalidate as required by (GOC, NMC, HCPC).
* Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development/competence.
* Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to specialty.
* Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes and teaching/assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting.
* Working in a multi-disciplinary and cross-agency work environment.
Desirable
* Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level in ophthalmology with eye-related disorders associated with the post applied for.
* Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator.
* Experience in service development.
* Experience of patient service user advocacy role.
