Role purpose and overview
As an Assistant Comment Editor, you will commission and edit opinion pieces for digital and print.
A creative approach and the confidence to explore new ideas is key. You'll also have the opportunity to liaise with our columnists and represent the desk at editorial meetings.
Key responsibilities
1. Commissioning and editing opinion pieces for digital and print.
2. Ability to come up with original, creative angles on stories that will work as comment articles.
3. Representing the comment desk at editorial meetings and pitching ideas to the relevant editors.
4. Building relationships and liaising regularly with columnists.
5. You will work with our audience teams on the promotion of opinion pieces.
6. Some weekend working required.
Key skills
1. Strong editorial judgement and ability to distinguish quickly between good and bad ideas and pitches.
2. Interest in politics, current and international affairs.
3. The ability to edit and improve copy quickly - you should be a stickler for linguistic details.
4. A strong understanding of the Telegraph's audience.
5. Previous experience working with comment writers would be desirable.
6. Confidence in writing headlines, with an understanding of SEO and social media platforms would be useful but is not essential.
