We are looking for a COBOL developer to work on our transition from Fujitsu mainframe to a new Microsoft Windows solution. Offering an exciting and flexible role, with career development. You’ll have contracted hours, but we are always happy to support flexible working wherever we can. That might mean working from home or different Nationwide offices or agreeing a working pattern to help you balance work and life. You will enjoy an excellent benefits package, a competitive salary and a permanent, full-time, and flexible 35 hour a week contract, with clear pathways to further development and promotion.
We want you to nurture and value proactive habits and to develop contacts and relationships, so things are done faster and more efficiently. We will expect you to get stuck in and have a go, and we will provide any support needed to learn new things in new areas.
In Mortgages and Financial Wellbeing we are modernising our system of record. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll be located at our nearest regional office. There will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events in one of our office sites. This is anticipated to be in our Swindon office once a month. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works.

Day-to-day you’ll be part of the project team delivering the new solution. You’ll collaborate closely with other engineers and testers, using your knowledge to allow us to test, support and build our new mortgage system of record platform so that our applications can stand up to being used by thousands of people every day.

What makes us different
Nationwide is the world’s largest building society. With over 15 million customers, we have a relationship with almost a quarter of the UK’s population. We’ve got the scale to compete with the big banks, but we’re not a bank.
As a building society, we’re owned by our members – that’s our customers who have their current account, mortgage or savings with us. It means we can do things differently to deliver our Purpose – Banking – but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.
When you work at Nationwide, you can experience that difference for yourself. You’ll be part of a high-performing, purpose-driven organisation that offers rewarding career experiences and a highly competitive range of benefits to match. You’ll also be joining us at an important time as we seek to reach more and more people in the UK. We want everyone in the UK to know that they don’t have to bank with a bank. They can choose a modern mutual instead.
